Schools and Education General Discussion
| Thanks for the information! No letter in our mail today either, but hopefully we'll all get good news tomorrow! |
| Do they send letter for No too at the same time as they Send for Yes? |
| They did a couple of years ago. |
| PP whose principal called. Our letter came today. We have to let them know GTC vs Local Level 4 by May 15. Slightly irritated since the GTC's Open House is not even until May 11. |
Wow, that is a quick turnaround. It doesn't help that people won't know bell schedules and such until May 21. Which option are you learning toward? |
Got a letter today.
|
We are leaning toward the GTC. But I hate to feel pressured.
|
| We just got ours- now I only have to volunteer at two schools next year! |
| Got a letter today too!! ^____^ |
| Congratulations to all those who got in. I'm very happy for you all. We must be one of the few families who didn't get in. I'm just confused as to why. My DD's scores were in the 99th percentile except for the reading section, and her grades are mostly O's with some G's. She is painfully shy, never talks in class, and she's not much of a leader. So I imagine her evaluation by her teacher may not have been outstanding. I was thinking about appealing but I don't see why another IQ test is going to make a difference, and I can't really change the teacher evaluation. Does anyone know anything about the appeal process, whether it's even worth going through. What "new" evidence do people appealing usually provide, test scores from the same test or scores from a differnt type of IQ test? |
I'm sorry you did not get in. Did you include WISC scores with the application? Most people I know do not include the WISC with the initial application and "save" it for the appeal.
|
| I actually have never heard of WISC. That was not the test given by DD's school, and we didn't do any additional testing other than what was done by the school. Is the test very different than the CogAT and Naglieri? |
|
The WISC IV is the IQ test most commonly given to kids older than 6. The CogAT and Naglieri are not IQ tests. My DD did not do so well on the CogAT, but did extremely well on the Naglieri. She has some behavioral issues and we were worried about a low teacher score in addition to the relatively lower CogAT scores so we had a private psychologist do testing. But we held the WISC scores back (that show (99%+) in case she did not get in.
If you think your child would best be served in the GT program, I would have a private WISC test done. I would also ask your school's GT coordinator about why they think your child was denied. You have until June 1 to appeal: http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/pdfs/fillables/2009-10%20Adv%20Acad%20Level%20IV%20Program%20Appeal%20Form.pdf |

I'm so sorry that your DD didn't get in. The process seems a bit strange to me, that a child with such high scores would be denied.
You can ask to see the file that was submitted too, to see if the Gifted Behavior Rating Scale was particularly low and may have caused the denial. I don't think that there is much that you can do about that, except wait until next year and hope that next year's teacher rates your child higher, or have someone who knows your child well write a recommendation addressing whatever low scores your child was given in the GBRS. I would also pay for a WISC if that might help. |

When my DD got in two years ago there were a number of her friends that had been in the pool but were then not admitted. However, the next year (this school year) had so many new students (and quite a few of my D's friends from the original pool) that MW had to add another class.
Maybe you could take this nex year to see how your daughter enjoys the GT pull out program in her own school (she's now considered level 3) and ask to speak to the GT resource teacher as well as her base teacher regarding her progress. |
