Actually, NPR did a piece about two weeks ago saying that the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Dept is going to put in a new cricket field because the demand for cricket is so high. I can't remember the details, but I think they said they need about 6 or 7 fields to meet the growing demand. Interesting piece.

Is that sport popular mostly with first generation immigrants? I have many indian friends from college who were second or third gen and never heard any mention cricket.

All the indian boys in my neighborhood play cricket. It is funny trying to watch the baseball players try to adjust their swing and vice versa.

That's awesome (not sarcastic, being real), but it definitely is more popular among 1st generation immigrants because its just not played here really much, and certainly not televised or anything where kids get into it if they aren't already exposed. It is getting gloablly more popular though because of the T20 matches that last about as long as a baseball game in the US give or take, 1 day and 5 day matches are brutal and the "Americanized" kids aren't going to get into those. I'm just a boring American myself, FWIW, but spent some time in Sri Lanka and man, they love their cricket. I actually like the shorter format games as a spectator.

American Indians (i.e., native americans)

Never use "native American" to refer to American Indians. It's extremely politically incorrect.

I remember when Native American *WAS* the politically correct term.

Wait, I was taught that Native American was PC and that Indian was offensive. When did this change?

(and please spare me the upper caucasia eyeball -- the streets around my homes have been fairly diverse with other ethnicities and countries of origin. Just not Indian, and very, very few native-born Chinese people (vs. adopted kids) )

Old charming housing stock has no appeal for Indians nor do the bad DC schools. They worked their asses off to get to the
states or if they were born here, their parents made them work their asses off. They want new houses and excellent schools.

We know at least 10 South Asian families in Upper NW. What's common to all of them is that they're all from well off families and didn't have to move to the US to be successful. What you're saying is probably very true of the strivers though.

Not many in northern Ward 4 in DC--but I did meet some nice Indian neighbors just today. Oh, and in 1/2 Indian, in case that counts a bit.

Whoops, that should be "I'm 1/2 Indian."

It's because of the public schools. JKLMM, Deal, SWW/Wilson does not measure up to FFX and TJ.

Yep. Oddly, all of my neighbors of other nationalities / ethnicities who also demand the very best just pay for private. Rather than moving to Fairfax County.

Interesting. Who's running 7-11s there then?

Ethiopians

That is correct. The only 7-11 I can think of in Ward 3 is run by Ethiopians

Look at what I found:

http://statisticalatlas.com/metro-area/District-of-Columbia/Washington/Languages

You can tell by selecting Indian languages, that they mostly prefer Loudoun county and some parts of MC and FC. It's stereotypical for Indians to like a good deal, so they live in good deal areas: good schools, low crime, good amenities, yet lower housing prices because it's not centrally located.
