It certainly is true in terms of housing. Marshall has more multi family housing than other schools mentioned. Its boundary includes all the apartments and condos on both sides of Rt 7 from Whole Foods to Tysons. The gentrification is referring to the Pimmit Hills neighborhood with the tearing down of older SF homes for newer ones. Nearby is the Silver Line metro.

It also makes it one of the most interesting student bodies in the area. Marshall, like any school, isn't without its problems, but overall, the diversity makes for a really special community. I love the fact that kids come from multi-family housing and wish the gentrification of Pimmit Hills would slow down. We don't need another public school composed of primarily rich spoiled kids.

There's not really anything distinctive about Marshall now other than having a somewhat less affluent student body than some nearby schools and a lingering inferiority complex about it. Talk to other families about Marshall and they see it as largely spoiled rich kids (like the bratty Marshall students arrested a couple of years ago after filming YouTube videos of themselves smashing milk gallons in Vienna supermarkets and then pretending to slip and be hurt). It pulls from a bunch of random neighborhoods in NoVa and overall gets less community support than George Mason, McLean or Madison, all of which remain more sought-after (as any perusal of real estate listings and sales will demonstrate).

Marshall wants to join the "club" in the worst way. It's obvious from the many "look at me" threads.

Some others don't think they belong. That's equally obvious from some of the responses.

At the end of the day, I'd bet the Marshall people like the attention, good or bad. There are other great schools like Chantilly, West Springfield, Lake Braddock, Robinson, and Fairfax, and you don't see people there playing these silly games.

As a Marshall parent, I'd just as soon Marshall's improvements over the years remained a secret. Keeps people who care about things like school ranking away.

Doesn't everybody care about test scores, to some greater pr lesser extent?

It's become a standardized test factory. We pulled our child out of the school.

There is a pattern to every school and marshall is ok, the most random pattern is actually mclean and langley the most widespread

George Mason is the only HS in Falls Church City. McLean is the high school for central McLean. Madison is the high school for the Town of Vienna. Langley is the high school for all of Great Falls.

Marshall is the high school for a regional shopping mall, some office parks, and a bunch of random neighborhoods in Falls Church, Vienna, Dunn Loring and McLean. There really isn't any community that takes much interest in the school compared to the others.

Spoken like someone who knows absolutely nothing about the school. But keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel good.

There is some poster on here who is obsessed with the idea that Marshall doesn't have a "home town" area. The families that I know at Marshall are very happy and no one I know from the school has mentioned that particular aspect. NoVA isn't really about small towns anyway. It's not New England.

You know it's true. No community takes any particular interest in Marshall. It sucks for the kids when they see the community support students at other schools receive. Sorry if you can't handle it.

If you look at the map madison (which i probably your zone, i can smell you from a mile away), isn't just vienna, it's far out, mclean and langley aren't any better.

Most Marshall families in Vienna would much prefer to be at Madison. It's not exactly a secret.

BTW we are in McLean and there isn't really a community feel for the entire area, the map is cut up and far reaching. The entire DC area is very transient. People come and go everywhere. It's not a small Mulberry, NC like town where people grow up and band together.

That's very outdated thinking. I assume you probably grew up around here in the 90s or are old.

I am zoned for McLean and would chose Marshall over Madison because of the better education programs, newer updated facilities and STEM academy offerings. http://www.fcps.edu/marshallacademy/

What exactly does the Town of Vienna do for Madison other than call it their high school? I know Fairfax actually gives Fairfax High school extra money, but I haven't heard the Town of Vienna doing anything similar nor any other town. Does Herndon give Herndon High School more money? At "Vienna Idol" the concert on the town green where some high school kids competed, the contestants were both from Madison and Marshall so I don't see them favoring one school over the other.
