Every time I suggest on this forum that all I schools are good I set off a hornet's nest somehow, but I'm a slow learner. . . . These numbers are *really* good, across the board. McLean has a lot of "drug" offenses, but that could simply be because enforcement is stricter. Everything from cigarettes to PCP gets bundled into that category, so that might be a lot of kids getting busted puffing on a cig behind the dumpster between classes. Again, might just be tougher enforcement. I doubt that there is a lot of hard drugs or alcohol *in school* at any of these schools. When you consider how large these schools are, the small numbers of offenses against other students and staff are de minimus in all of these schools (although, again, that could be the result of low enforcement). Madison and Marshall seem to have higher incidents of "disorderly and disruptive behavior." Query whether some of the offenses that might have gone into other categories get put there. Or maybe that has a lot to do with the administration taking "official" action against students in a higher percentage of incidents. But however you look at it, we should be happy that all of our schools appear to be really safe places for our kids to attend. Remember, these schools have around 2000 teenagers with underdeveloped frontal lobes, and these are stats for the entire years. I doubt even a military academy could get its numbers much better. At the end of the day, we need to take a step back from the quibbling about whose school is better than who else's school, and appreciate that we're dealing with a pretty elite batch of schools here.

at least you're not at South Lakes...

When you are hanging your school's ability on a football score, you know you're beat. Because, after all, the only reason students do well and succeed is because of their football team.

Too bad they don't include cheating and resume padding on the list of offenses.

There is no cheating going on at other schools? There is probably more cheating goin on at other high schools. As for resumes, it's called resume building not resume padding.

Hi all- I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to look up this kind of data for ACPS.

Marshall is the high school for a regional shopping mall, some office parks, and a bunch of random neighborhoods in Falls Church, Vienna, Dunn Loring and McLean. There really isn't any community that takes much interest in the school compared to the others.

This is your platform agains Marshall on every thread for at least the past three years. Not everyone wants/needs that Midwestern/southern town feel where life revolves around the high school. This is northern Virginia. It's not like that here. Never has been, never will be.

No one is suggesting life should revolve entirely around the local high school. However, Marshall is particularly deficient in terms of not having a community feel compared to many of the schools with which it likes to be compared. The kids know it, the parents know it, and the people avoiding the district to buy elsewhere know it. You are in denial about something that is well known in local circles and not really up for debate.

NP here.

"Not really up for debate"? Well, that sure shuts me down! If it's not up for debate in your book, heaven forbid we should say you're wrong.

Unless YOU have a child actually attending Marshall right now, or had a child there recently, I don't see how you can have any idea what you're talking about. Those "local circles" tend to be people who had kids there decades ago and who have no idea what goes on inside the doors now.

This. I'd trust people who are there now. I've had 3 kids at GCM in the last 7 years and I love the community. But I seldom go around proclaiming that because I'd rather fewer kids "discovered" Marshall.

We had kids at Marshall recently. Now that we've moved I'll admit we wish they'd gone to Madison or McLean instead. AP is more flexible than IB and those schools have better extra-curriculars (band, theatre, crew), too.

Obviously people who are currently zoned for GCM will stick up for it. It would be sad if they didn't. It's a good school but there are better ones out there, unless you're really gung-ho about IB. And, even if you think you are interested in IB, Washington-Lee might be a better choice since it has both IB and AP.
