Compacted math question

Actually, some teachers do provide some math acceleration in k-2. It's not pullout services, and can be as simple as some more advanced worksheets and higher math groups, but there is some differentiating going on.

My son gets or used to get these. It really just more worksheets, nothing interesting. The teacher ended up letting him turn the paper over and come up with his own math problems. It keeps him busy and is better than just extra worksheets but neither she nor I would call this meaningful differentiation though I'm sure the MCPS admins that post all over these boards will disagree. Ughh..hate those idiots.

Something is very rotten about this math curriculum. From talking to parents with older kids now in 2.0 Algebra - is Algebra in name only. Don't forget MCPS labels some of the activities in 1st grade "Algebra". They can just replay what they did in 1st grade and call it Algebra in middle school!2.0 seems to be a random mishmash of concepts poorly presented and out of logical order to develop skill or knowledge or the system of math. MCPS admin types don't care though. They don't understand math and as long as they can label it something that they think is impressive, well so be it. There are enough fools who will follow them over them the edge.

Based on what I've seen up until 3rd grade, there is no way kids who aren't very math savvy or are receiving outside instruction would be even remotely ready for real Algebra in middle school with the 2.0 background. MCPS isn't prepping them for real Algebra, its prepping them for the watered down fake 2.0 version.

Its all fine if you think math is worthless subject or only necessary to manage your household budget.

My child took 2.0 algebra last year and still did very well on the state tests at the end of the year..much above the state norm. Unless you are contending the whole state has watered down math, I am not concerned.

I haven't noticed any MCPS administrators posting all over these boards. Whom are you referring to?

DC is not currently in MCPS and is doing middle school math now. DC received a perfect quantitative test score on the Cogat. (I'm am telling the truth and no, I will not post his scores on DCUM so if you think I'm a troll that's your issue.) I am concerned he will be bored in math in a HGC next year. Is that possible? Is there any way to accelerate his math education, if necessary, at a HGC?

Exact same situation here with my current 4th grader. Perfect score on the HGC test and very high MAP M scores. My son is happier in math than he ever has been just because of the peer group. The curriculum may be the same but for us is has not been the same as home school. Sure,it would be nice if it was more challenging but it's an improvement. Btw eye opening experience for my son to be around kids even better at math than him.

PP here. That is really good to hear!

I guess no admin is posting here because no one knows whether the principal can put a student in compacted math even if he or she misses the cut off.

An admin would never answer a specific question. They'd just be defensive about the unquestionable righteousness of whatever whim MCPS is on du jour.

Why would you expect MCPS administrators to post on DCUM? I hope that they have better things to do with their time.

Oh, they read these boards and jump in anonymously.

I'm wondering how you know that, if it's anonymous.

Also, if it's anonymous, how do you know that they're not posting?

I heard that MCPS has determined this year's cutoff. Does anyone know what it is?

No, compacted math assessment is the UCARE assessment, not MAP-M.

Cut off for compacted math. It's five questions goven over several weeks or months one question at a time. There was a total of 50 points possible. I don't know what the cut off was this year but I heard it's a lower cut off than last yet (they seem to change the assesement questions and cut off each year).

I asked my DC who told me the questions were very easy. He got MAP-M Spring score over 250, I would be surprised if not selected into compacted.
