My child was 1 point below cutoff. Child was retested in Fall (with one much harder question then original test!) Furthermore, technically question was at HS level (or at least very advanced 7th grade, but not remotely 3rd or 4th grade)
I had to fight school, literally FIGHT, to get my child in class. Studying in class in non-issue, and my child is at the upper half... All these tests are arbitrary, and graded based on oral responses... You get absolutely uneven grading from different teachers. It also depend how verbal your child, his/her mood on the each day of testing etc. |

| Do all schools re-test in fall, or only the HGC? My child REALLY REALLY wants to be in compacted math. She told me she bombed the first mini-assessment, though, because she was sick, so unless she got full points on all the other ones, I'm worried she won't make the cut-off. |

| It's not exactly a test. It's 5 problems given on different days. Student has to explain reasoning to the teacher. |

My DC's compacted math class is huge. Its almost standing room only but the kids are all fine with the size. There are many kids who would do fine in these class and scored as high as the initial kids on the following test. The schools will tell parents the second test is harder but they really are trying to hide the fact that the child is perfectly qualified to be in the class but they don't have room.
The school really needs to allocate two classes to compacted math but they won't because then too many kids would be above the sacred MCPS stay on level mantra. This is just wrong. |

My child's compacted class is 10 kids and it is in the school. What would their reason for keeping kids out be?
According to my son, some kids that are in there should not be in the class, but he really enjoys it. It's like a private school class. I think too many people think "conspiracy" rather than just realizing that not too many kids are really so advanced in math and need Algebra in 7th grade. |

I'm confused by this poster. What "second test" are you talking about? And is this a regular neighborhood school or a HGC? |

| I think the second test refers to the reassessment that is done in the fall for students who were close but lower than the MCPS cut off during the initial 3rd grade assessment. |

I am wondering about the HGC compacted math--I was told it was the same compacted math that is given in the home school . What if your child can do above 5th grade math already? DC is not currently in MCPS and is doing middle school math now. DC received a perfect quantitative test score on the Cogat. (I'm am telling the truth and no, I will not post his scores on DCUM so if you think I'm a troll that's your issue.) I am concerned he will be bored in math in a HGC next year. Is that possible? Is there any way to accelerate his math education, if necessary, at a HGC?

Good grief. PP, if your son is extra-super-outstanding at math, there is probably no group education that is appropriate for him. If he is just garden-variety good at math, he should be fine at the HGC. The HGC will have plenty of students who are garden-variety good at math. |
