How many times have you changed your ranking today?

Having the same issue, but we are at an up and coming DCPS. I entered last year and it drove me nuts because we were matched with out #1 pick, but turned it down due to the commute.

Maybe that's a silly question but how does it work if you turn down your #1 school and so you are not on one waiting list, how do you still get into a school? From what I understand you can't do Round 2 if you were matched.

And people wonder why the lottery is so screwy. If she had just done her research on the front end, this wouldn't have happened? Did she not know about the commute? I don't understand why she ranked it #1 if she knew about the commute. This is what is so frustrating to me about the lottery people like the poster here - she was in a school, went through the lottery - got matched and then...turned it down because, WAH she didn't want to drive in her car?

Oh, for heaven's sake. Don't get in a twist. People turning down lottery spots is NOT why the lottery is difficult.

No, people entering for fun is.

NP, seriously? You think someone entering and turning down a spot is what makes the lottery difficult? How about just not having enough available good seats for the thousands of children who want them? THAT's what makes the lottery difficult: that good seats are a scarce resource.

We have two HRCS that are not a great commute (but doable, I think) above a pretty good charter that would have a really easy commute. (Bridges, Lee, and IT are the schools, the commute is from North Petworth. We currently take the green line and would prefer to stay with a metro commute, if possible).

Just in case someone wanted to weigh in

I don't understand. Are all three a poor commute for you? We're at Lee and it's worth a commute, but not if it will be soul crushing. there are several families that currently live in or near Petworth (and further away). Bear in mind though that Lee will be moving after next year.

Bridges would be a great commute; Lee and IT would not be as easy. I know Lee will be moving, but it sounds like it will stay in the Brookland area, right?

Thanks everyone! I just changed the rankings with Bridges higher.

Hang on! you are taking into account the NEW location of Bridges, yes?

Yup, we know about the new location. We are located in North Petworth (sometimes called Manor Park, but I don't want to get into that debate right now...), so the move is actually just as easy for us. I think the commute to IT/Lee is not bad from more southern locations in Petworth, but it would require us to get onto N. Capital and all that grossness. I've never driven for commuting before and hate driving, so I think Bridges just makes more sense, since we can presumably walk/bus to the school. Thank you to everyone for your help!

Bridges sounds good especially for metro. However, we come from North Petworth and don't even touch N Capitol. We take Michigan over to Franklin or Harewood to 4th.

What's up people - what do these lists look like? Please share! IS Mundo Verde on the top of everyone's list again this year? Is YY in the mix? IT and CM seem to be getting more traction but the commute doesn't seem that friendly to many. SWS? That too seems a bit of an ugly commute if you're not on the hill. Anyone still trying to get in OOB to some good neighborhood schools - is that even an option anymore?

I changed them once. Although, we only put a few schools on. It's PK3, we like our daycare center's curriculum and our child is happy there--we'll only switch at this point if we get into a school that we like that is also convenient.

I put Ross on my list. If we don't get in, I don't care all that much, since it's just PK3 and we're happy to skip it altogether. Most of the schools we really like don't even have PK3, so our "real" lottery will be next year. So why not try?

I think 2R ranked higher on WL than MV. CM and IT were also high last year (esp in lower grades) so no news there. Biggest surprise to me seems to be how so many people ranked Lee in top 3 so far. Alright for competition!!

Out of interest, how do you know this? (I'm a current Lee parent so happy for the Lee love, just wondering).

Just the few threads that directly or indirectly have people listing their top 12.

We switched from a good DCPS to an "even better" DCPS and the commute and extra expenses associated with a non-Title 1 school are making us miss our old school even more than we would have (miss the administrators, old school mates, many aspects of the school. Not enough to change back, but damn.)

Dropped my lottery application today after getting child into private school we want. That may open up a PK4 spot at Murch for someone.

Which private?

I've lived in Petworth for 15 years and I've never heard of a neighborhood called "North Petwoth". Is the a name made up by realtors (ala North Bethesda)?
