Hanging around poor friends (low hhi)

I don't find a HHI income of $500k with Ivy degrees all that impressive. It's not uncommon to have $500k of income with 2 working professionals who went to good schools. In fact, $500k of income doesn't get you into top 1% in DC... Get off your high horse, OP. You're not that sweet. Talk to us when you have at least a million of annual income.

DD makes nearly $2M and I work as a school admin for $18/hour. We have a net worth of $10M. I drive a 10 year old car; Dh's car is 6 years old. Kids clothes are from last years' clearance rack plus hand-me-downs. My clothes are from mid-level mall stores and are several years old. Kids go to public school ((((GASP)))
We eat out at high end restaurants but you'd never know it as I don't :check-in: on facebook.

I guess you wouldn't be my friend as I must look like one of THe Poors.

^^ DH and I are both state university grads and our kids are NOT in AAP nor are they superstars in soccer, swimming nor piano.

We make 500k a year and are ivy educated. My husband is a biglaw non equity partner and I'm a sahm - former psychologist.

How does your lifestyle budget change with your human surroundings? We feel ashamed to spend money on a bugaboo when the locals use graco. Whole foods prepared lunches versus local groceries. Prestigious clothing versus hand me downs.

Does anyone else deal with these psychological trappings of success?

Oh my EFing GOD this has got to be a fake troll post!! If not, I have lost all faith in humanity and common decency.

I doubt you actually have friends

We make a 5th of what you make. We have three kids. I use hand me downs. I cannot afford grocery shopping at whole foods, and budget every single penny that goes out the door. We are a very happy family, our kids are thriving in school, and we have great friends that share our core values regardless of HHI. I don't feel I am missing on antything, and I consider ourselves very lucky to have what we have and to be who we are. Some of our friends make more than you do, and honestly, you sound so shallow. Money and lifestyle doesn't make you better. I think you are lacking. Good luck to you and I hope your kids don't pick after you. You are embarrassing.

I forgot to add, that if in fact you are a troll, you have to be really bored and empty to need to stir the pot to get something to talk about today. Get a life OP.

Of all of the things to worry about in this world, this is what has you conflicted?!? Geez! I'm glad I'm not your friend...

Anonymous wrote:OP, I totally understand. In fact if I was not so filthy rich, I would totally hang with you. But, alas, I cannot do that because it will lower my economic expectations!

As you know, "poorness" is contagious!

Well put!!

You amuse me, OP. I believe your point is that as a psychologist you overthink these issues?

I shop at Whole Foods, use a Stokke Xplory stroller and buy designer clothes, because I like that sort of thing.
My HHI is nowhere near yours, however I am perhaps richer than you.

Relax, breathe, think outside the box, don't bother about what others think of you.

Maybe OP is from a poor background and feels she needs to compensate to fit in with her current economic reality. People who are from an old money background never worry about this stuff and do as they please.

Ha. This is so us. Our secret splurge is traveling, which we do very well. I also don't "check in" on fb because it's really too much.
