Ye Olde K Reading Group Question

In K and first it was hard to watch my child stay at the same level for over a year. It was refreshing in third grade once they switched to the MAP-R test for reading instead of M-class. Score on that was 99% for 2 grades up so finally saw I wasn't crazy and the reading was really up there.

And back to OP, i think its really common for the level to be lower than where the kid can read. My younger child, a first grader, is at level 13 but can read all the words in level 16 or even J or K books. Probably at lower level though since not answering the questions with enough detail.

I confess I don't understand this capping thing at all...our 4-year-old is already reading at somewhere between K and M with good comprehension and can also write short sentences about what she has read. We will do EEK to start K this fall...does the cap mean that she can only work on books up through, for example, J all through kindergarten, even if she is well above that reading level? I guess this is something to discuss at K orientation. We left DCPS because our oldest, who was also a very advanced reader, was mostly left alone with books because she was too far ahead to be taught with other kids.

Yes, that's right, PP. There are a lot of kids in the same situation as yours and in some schools she will have to start at a much lower level than J and work her way up.

Depends on your school. At our school, yes that is what would happen. In fact it took until end of second grade before he made it to level M and I thought the same as you going in.

I would not ask this at orientation but instead send the principal an email or ask privately after orientation. Just ask how they handle advanced readers. Once K starts keep on the teacher to give your daughter something.

This is PP, I meant end of first grade but you get the idea.
