I confess I don't understand this capping thing at all...our 4-year-old is already reading at somewhere between K and M with good comprehension and can also write short sentences about what she has read. We will do EEK to start K this fall...does the cap mean that she can only work on books up through, for example, J all through kindergarten, even if she is well above that reading level? I guess this is something to discuss at K orientation. We left DCPS because our oldest, who was also a very advanced reader, was mostly left alone with books because she was too far ahead to be taught with other kids.
Depends on your school. At our school, yes that is what would happen. In fact it took until end of second grade before he made it to level M and I thought the same as you going in. I would not ask this at orientation but instead send the principal an email or ask privately after orientation. Just ask how they handle advanced readers. Once K starts keep on the teacher to give your daughter something.
