| The rumor I heard is that RCF will not feed into the new MS because it adds diversity to Westland. But all of our neighbors who now have kids at Westland say it's a great school, if only it wasn't overcrowded, which it won't be once the new school is built. I just wish it wasn't so far away from the RCF neighborhood. |
| I fear the dreaded split articulation will occur. IB certification for the new school will not happen immediately, so at least the immersion side of RCF will continue to feed to Westland. |
| What does IB mean? A quick look at their website doesn't give me much info. |
If the rumor about RCF going to Westland because it adds diversity is true, and the immersion side of RCF needs to continue to feed into Westland, it is unlikely that they would split up the school, as the diversity comes from the neighborhood program, not immersion. |
International Baccalaureate. |
Right. But what does it *mean*? Different subjects? Advanced curriculum? Is it something all kids do, or a special program? |
|
Information about the program generally:
http://www.ibo.org/en/programmes/middle-years-programme/curriculum/ and at Westland, http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/westlandms/about/Westland%20MYP%20Progress%20Report%20Letter%202014-2015-with%20semester%20report.pdf |
| The IB is at Westland not RCF and is for all students. The Middle Years IB can be continued in grades 9 and 10 at B-CC. |
I'm not the PP who brought up RCF students going to Westland because of IB, but doesn't Westland have some sort of partial immersion program that the RCF immersion students go into? I thought that's what I heard at the RCF immersion open house a couple of years ago (our child is not in immersion). If that's the case, it would still be true that the RCF Spanish immersion kids would have to go to Westland. |
| The RCF Immersion students at Westland take Immersion Spanish 6/7/8 and their 6th/7th grade World Studies is taught in Spanish. |
That's crazy - totally bring your baby. They are not going to send you away. I am sorry they said that to you. Of course you can bring your baby! Ergh. And this is a school - supposed to be kid-friendly!! Sigh. My kids are in the immersion at RCF and we've liked it alot. The families in the English academy are not always as happy, but overall it's a wonderful school - principal, counselor, building!! It's really a great place. Good luck -- |
| Why aren't the parents on the English side as happy? |
They are mad their kids didn't get into immersion. They are unhappy that their kids have to go to school with children who live in the apartments on the other side of Weast West Highway, who might be (gasp!) low income and even worse, (gasp!) not white. They feel that immersion takes away from the feel of a neighborhood school (ridiculous) and gets more attention and resources (also ridiculous, considering that the immersion classes have more kids in them with the same number of teachers and immersion teachers have to create their own materials). They are mad that the PTA has more immersion parents on it (don't even know where to go on that one). They are also, secretly, mad that immersion kids get to go on to Westland and BCC while often paying less for their houses, an issue compounded by the fact that in Checy Chase, the RCF area houses are the cheapest and crummiest. They feel that immersion is a way for parents to cheap out on housing and get the same opportunities that their kids get. Most are not well off so they've had to stretch for a house in the RCF area and it makes them resentful both of richer CC families and the immersion families. |
*East West highway. Kind of a funny typo
|
| Website says they are getting new programs: pep, autism, preschool? Any rcf parent know more than whats on website? |
