Thoughts on Rock Creek Forest Elementary?

As far as reading levels go for RCF or any school, guided reading groups are formed based on the levels of the students. Some groups may be working on a first grade level, another group may be doing eltter names and sounds. If one student is an outlier (high or low) in his/her class, s/he might go to another teacher for a reading group to be with students at that same level.

Thanks - good to know!

It does make sense that it's not school specific. We don't have a special snowflake, but are at a great preschool right now, so are afraid to start public...

We have a kid in K in the neighborhood program and have been very impressed with the school. The new building is amazing, the class sizes are small, and the staff is wonderful, not just the principal, but assistant principal counselor, etc. It has a great community feel and they really try to integrate the Spanish and English sides, at least in K. My son's group for "specials" (music, art and PE) has kids from the five K classes (3 English and 2 Spanish).

We are in the same position. Plan to try rcf for K. I figure there are others like us who have had kids in good preschools. Plus my neighbors say good things. When we bought our house the prior owners moved within the rcf community and had kids in the school. I took this as a good sign.

Friday January 16th there is an Open House for prospective families at 10:00 a.m. at RCF. Anyone interested in attending should contact the office at 301-650 6410.

Thank you for posting this!

To the person who posted about the open house. I just called the office and said I would like to attend. I am home with a
newborn on maternity leave. The office said they would prefer I not bring the baby. Do you think it would be a real problem? If so I probably won't be able to go, but I don't want to cause a problem.

From their website, it looks like the Jan. 16th Open House is for the Spanish Immersion. Will there be something similar for the neighborhood side?

Did anyone attend the open house? The building was really nice, but I'm not so sure about the actual school. The English Academy K teacher we saw could not have looked less interested in her class. She was at her desk doing something while the kids all sat at tables with worksheets. It also seemed that every special we saw--art, music, PE--involved kids just sitting on the floor. Is this how it usually goes, or did we catch some off moments?

I couldn't make it. But in just the past week I have met 2 more families who are very happy with the school.

Any parents of current K or 1st grade students there?

Yep, I posted in this thread earlier. We have a kid in K at RCF (English) and couldn't be happier. My son loves school and isn't at all bored, so I have to assume they do more than sit on the floor. I'm happy to answer specific questions. I personally don't know anyone who is unhappy with the school (which doesn't mean there aren't people who are unhappy, just that all the families we know, both in the English and Spanish programs, are generally pleased.

This is great to hear! We are very excited to start K this fall! Love our neighborhood

Does all of Rock Creek Forest feed into Westland Middle and BCC High? Will there be any boundary changes once the new middle school is built? Will RCF continue to feed into BCC after the new middle school is built?

It is unknown whether RCF will feed into the new BCC MS, or continue to feed to Westland. Whichever MS that RCF feeds into, that MS will feed BCC High School.

The consensus on these boards (FWIW) is that of the six elementary schools in the BCC cluster that feed direct to MS, it is likely that CC and NCC will feed to the new MS, Somerset & Westbrook will feed to Westland. Unknown which way the split will go between RCF and Bethesda E. Split articulations may also be possible?
