Arlington for an Asian-American family

This is a very strange question, indeed -- ask your realtor and walk around the neighborhoods you're interested in.

Please don't ask your realtor where people of a certain race/color/religion/national origin live. It is illegal for him or her to tell you or otherwise choose neighborhoods for you based on those criteria.

No it isn't. They can answer any direct question with factual answers. You can't expect an answer to "are the schools good" but you can certainly ask and get an answer to "do the children in the neighborhood attend the local public school?"

Partly because your chances of getting into TJ are better, and Asian families around here seem to value that a lot, but it's probably also self-fulfilling. Asians didn't settle in North Arlington in large numbers, so the next generation of Asians see North Arlington as not welcoming to Asians.

Interestingly (at least to me), the only elementaries in Arlington that have any significant percentage of Asians are Science Focus and ATS. Which probably both appeal to the same demographic as TJ in Fairfax.

i might be mistaken but many (~50%?) of the Asian kids at ASFS come from new immigrant families from Mongolia living in apartments in the boundary. So I'm not sure about the 'TJ appeal' applies there.

Also Oakridge has many Asian kids.

My two blonde kids are minorities in their classroom at Arlington Science Focus. This N Arlington school has loads of diversity---not all Hispanic like S.Arlington.

+1

only one blond kid in my DC's class at ASFS - and she just moved to the US this past year (parent works at embassy of home country). VERY diverse.

Asians continue to prefer FCPS over APS in large numbers. There are two elementaries in western Fairfax that together have more Asian kids than all of Arlington's 22 elementaries combined. There are also two middle schools in FCPS that each have more Asian students than all the Arlington middle schools combined, and TJHSST alone has almost twice as many Asian students as all the Arlington high schools combined.

People in North Arlington are more concerned about your socioeconomic status than your race. We live in a pretty white neighborhood where the original homes are being torn down and replaced with big houses. People who buy these new houses will most likely be educated and wealthy. They will be welcome with open arms no matter what color they are. It's the lower-class people in the original homes who are being looked down upon by the. If you drive a big loud pickup with a huge Don't Tread on Me flag and your lawn is filled with broken-down cars and your house is in disrepair, you're not what North Arlington wants.

OP, I don't know if you already live in the DC area, but Arlington really isn't a place where Asian families with other choices tend to live.

Most Asians in Montgomery County and Fairfax County are prosperous and their kids usually have high test scores. Asians in Arlington are lower on the SES scale than the whites, and more often from Southeast Asia and South Asia than from East Asian countries like Korea or China. When they start to do better financially, they move out of Arlington.

Ignore the troll.

Do you know any real-life Asians? Because this is pretty much the opposite of my experience. Our younger, lower HHI Asian friends live in Fairfax because they can't afford to live closer in and the ones who finally can afford to do so move closer in to Arlington later on.

Those are also much lower HHI areas of FFX

Very true. Lately, there are many Mongolian families moving into Arlington. As soon as they can afford to move to Fairfax County, they do.

Are you joking? The Carson and Rocky Run MS areas are not low HHI areas. They do have great AAP programs, however, and much stronger track records of getting kids into TJ than any Arlington schools, so they appeal to many Asian families.

Very false. One could say the same about FOB Chinese moving from DC to Springfield.

Most Asians I know are middle class, high savers and under consumers of wealth. They're not flashy. So Chantilly and Centreville and Rockville have tons of Asians. Chevy chase, NW DC and N Arlington have few.

The HHIs are much lower in that part of FFX than N Arlington...www.census.gov

And don't be racist. Not all Asians becomes tech nerds. Many become Law Partners and Investment Bankers too.

Doubtful they are moving into North Arlington since it is considerably more expensive there than anywhere in Fairfax County save the more elite parts of McLean or Great Falls....

You must not know Oakton or Chantilly very well.

Again, the evidence is very clear successful Asians prefer Fairfax schools to any part of Arlington.

Give yourself a cookie, but it doesn't change the fact that Asian families prefer FCPS over APS, even when you control for HHI.
