Arlington for an Asian-American family

Anonymous
We're also an Asian family and we did look at Arlington. I can tell you that the odds that your kid will be the ONLY Asian in the classroom will be much higher if you live in North Arlington than just about anywhere else in the DC region.

I'm glad that other Asians who live in Arlington are happy, but this is just a fact.

People in North Arlington are more concerned about your socioeconomic status than your race. We live in a pretty white neighborhood where the original homes are being torn down and replaced with big houses. People who buy these new houses will most likely be educated and wealthy. They will be welcome with open arms no matter what color they are. It's the lower-class people in the original homes who are being looked down upon by the. If you drive a big loud pickup with a huge Don't Tread on Me flag and your lawn is filled with broken-down cars and your house is in disrepair, you're not what North Arlington wants.

OP, I don't know if you already live in the DC area, but Arlington really isn't a place where Asian families with other choices tend to live.

Most Asians in Montgomery County and Fairfax County are prosperous and their kids usually have high test scores. Asians in Arlington are lower on the SES scale than the whites, and more often from Southeast Asia and South Asia than from East Asian countries like Korea or China. When they start to do better financially, they move out of Arlington.

WTF are you talking about? I'm south asian, a very high income earner, living in a very expensive part of 22207 and guess what...there are more Asian (east and south) families that have been moving in the last 3 years. Take your ignorance and passive-aggressive racism and shove it.

HAHA, I know, right? Low SES people can't afford to live in Arlington, period. Plus, overall in this country, Asians are in the higher SES than whites anyway (mixed race couples -- Asian and white -- have the very highest HHIs). Not sure what racist PP was thinking!

Especially in the 4 big white castles.

OP here. What is a big white castle?

DH and I should pass the SES test. We are both ivy league educated, have successful careers and earn healthy six figure incomes.

White castle: burger joint that stoners love. Clearly PP is a stoner Asian.

I know Op you are being genuine in asking your question, but I find these types of questions so strange. (similar to the "we're a mixed black/white family, where will we fit in?". I mean, this is a BIG metropolitan area. NoVa is very diverse. And Asians have a big presence in that diversity. Of COURSE you will fit in in Arlington! And in Fairfax County! Holy smokes.

Yes, there are some schools with higher Asian populations than others, but I can't imagine there are many schools in NoVa where being Asian would be out of the ordinary... especially any schools that are at least middle of the road or higher in test scores.

The four elementaries in North Arlington that are almost entirely white. Nottingham, Jamestown, Taylor and Tuckahoe.

+1

This is a very strange question, indeed -- ask your realtor and walk around the neighborhoods you're interested in.

As the mom of biracial kids, I picked a place that seemed neighborly, safe, and close to everything instead of profiling every neighborhood for some specific racial breakdown and lo and behold! My family is super happy. Shocking!

Oh no! What if OP's kids had to go to school with white people? Gross! And those schools have great scores, too -- double gross!

Do you know any real-life Asians? Because this is pretty much the opposite of my experience. Our younger, lower HHI Asian friends live in Fairfax because they can't afford to live closer in and the ones who finally can afford to do so move closer in to Arlington later on.

What is the 5th castle? A new school?

Asians prefer the school systems with gifted programs like AAP in Fairfax and HGC in Montgomery.

It reminds me of the many posts I see on here posted by white people wondering what it will be like for their white child in very Asian dominant schools. Oh the horror!

Higher-achieving Asians do pick areas other than Arlington.

There are literally dozens of Asian National Merit Semifinalists in both Montgomery and Fairfax Counties. Arlington? Not so many.
