Bowser Endorsed by Barry - Need I Say More?

The city said don't vote for Fenty and see what happened. So, you have a gentrified group tell native washingtonians don't vote for Bowser because of Marion Barry. Well, y'all done bumped your head. You might as well have said vote Louise Farrakhan for that matter and waited for the uproar.

Get over-it the percentage of whites may have increased but the percentage of registered white voters has not made a serious dent in the outcome. The average senior citizen building is filled to the rafters with African-Americans and all it takes is one yes mam and yes sir and the votes will pour in for Bowser.

You know how this city operates and it will never change regardless how many gentrified people move here to the Chocolate City.

My impression is that some african americans will vote for Catania - or, in fact for Schwartz - because they think The Man did in Mayor Gray, and they think CM Bowser was in on it. Endorsement by CM Barry may lessen that to some degree, as well as increase turn out. OTOH there are also some whites who will vote against Catania, for a range of reasons.

I personally know only one person who is voting for Bowser and one who is voting for Schwartz. Everyone else Catania. I think it will be a close election.

Before the primary I would have been with you on this. When Gray lost, I really began to question this. Gray lost even without being indicted.

And the exact same people who support and vote for folks like Barry then turn around scratching their heads wondering why things like the issues of multigenerational poverty aren't being resolved... It's because you keep electing the people who keep perpetuating and prolonging the problem. Hellooooooo....

There's a good reason Barry wanted to annex the Capital Riverfront/Navy Yard to Ward 8 several years ago so that he could lay claim to all that is happening. In the meantime, the proposal to construct a soccer stadium east of the Anacostia River fell apart in short order, while DC is willing to give away the Reeves Center to construct a stadium in SW. And the Maine Avenue Waterfront is in the throes of commencing redevelopment. While it seems likely that Historic Downtown Anacostia may benefit in the shortbterm from the proposed 11th Street Bridge development, which would be great, Barry has little to nothing to show in terms of jobs and economic growth in his own backyard. A few small restaurants or art galleries do not constitute an economic renaissance. It is unfortunate thar many in Ward 8 have not come to terms with the fact that Barry is an ineffectual relic who is content to stay in office by handing out a couple hundred frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving. It's also no coincidence that most of Barry's book signings have taken place in PG County.

Actually, I'm not sure that's correct. The ones scratching their heads are those who don't vote for him. The ones he keep re-electing him don't think things are as bad as you do.

I've taken PP's counsel to heart and have begun telling every AA that I meet that they should NOT vote for Catania under any circumstance. Hopefully this will swing the election in his favor.

Well, next time any discussion of the problem of multigenerational poverty comes up I guess we can now just rebut with "it doesn't exist, because Ward 8 Marion Barry supporters said so".

Thanks for clearing that up.

Hey Everyone, as far as I know, Marion Barry is not running for mayor. Moreover, I'm pretty sure that any candidate for mayor would have accepted his endorsement. Based on the primary, however, it is not worth much. But, most importantly, Barry's responsibility or lack thereof for all the District's ills is not a schools issue. If you would like to discuss that in the political forum, be my guest. But, let's keep this discussion focused on schools.

Oh puh-lease! I'm not voting for Bowser but trying to smear her because of Barry's endorsement is just ridiculous. And disgusting.

In a way, many of us DO see it as "Barry running for Mayor" - many of us see his political machine in action rallying behind Bowser, and whenever a machine puts someone in office, it's for a reason - influence and power, with Bowser serving as the public proxy for the real interests working behind the scenes.

As for "accepting an endorsement from Barry", I don't think that's ever something that Catania would have even had on his radar, much less something that Barry would have offered.

His most fervent supporters live in "Ward 9."

Moreover, Barry has a reputation for being hostile to business that is not African American owned. remember when he urged a boycott of what he termed "dirty" Asian-owned small businesses-- some of the businesses that were actually invested in his ward?

but didnt the mayor for life endorse Gray in the primary, and didnt Bowser have her roots in the Fenty machine, which Barry opposed? I realize Bowser is more conciliatory to the DC establishment than Fenty was, but the notion that she is another Bonds or Barry seems wrong to me. Some of her elusiveness on policy seems to result her attempting to keep the W4 Fenty supporters as well as the many AAs who never liked Fenty.
