DC Public and Public Charter Schools
I agree that Barry is the best politician in the history of DC. Hands down. Another reason he's fun to have around. Only the press loves him more than rich parts of town. |
|
How many DC kids are enrolled in private vs public, anyway?
Does anyone really give a crap who Barry endorses? I mean really. "I was going to vote for Bowser, but fee, I really dislike Barry so now I won't." I know a certain demographic sees him as symbolic of all that is/was wrong with DC, but did you actually live here when he was mayor? Do you live in Ward 8? |
|
This may sound crazy, but Barry knows a heck of a lot more about education and at-risk youth than Bowser does. That said, Barry will be just one of many be one of the many DC Dems establishment who will try to advise Bowser at her many tables. Barry is not doing well health-wise, so that might leave out influence for Ward 8 and the students most in need. Tony Williams is another adviser to Bowser, but he has a conflict of interest with his CEO role at Federal City Council.
Despite the title of this thread, I agree with Jeff that the OP raises important questions. Bowser's pledge to keep Henderson is admirable, but not enforceable. Why on earth would Kaya want to work for someone who says start over and fix things in 8 weeks before the lottery ends. Then there's Bowser's council resolution PRAISING the talented but technically truant student Avery Gagliano. Regardless of your thoughts on how this child's situation was handled, if you were Henderson, would you want to work for someone who so blatantly contradicted your leadership and legal mandate? Catania and Henderson may not be best buddies, but they're both Hoyas with deep connections to DC. Catania may have criticized Henderson, as well he should as chair of the education committee, but he's not blatantly undermined her or the chancellor's role. When it comes to education, Bowser is an amateur. And amateur hour is over. |
You are missing the point. Barry is beloved in nice parts of town. He's the toast of the Palisades. Barry is understood just as Bowser is understood. Catania is less understood and that scares people looking for a quiet life with no bumps as they head down MacArthur Boulevard. |
| Reminds me of how Catania endorsed Bush and raised money for him |
Tony might be Federal City now but he was owned by WTU as Mayor. Barry is smart and does make decent choices for his constituents. That is why he is not as anti-charter as the average mom in Ward 2 or 3. Catania and Bowser have know each other since freshman year and would together closely. |
| What's Barry done for me lately? Nothing, other than serve as a perpetual monument of embarrassment for the city. Marion Barry, with his history of corruption, is the reason why many others consider DC politics to corrupt and for DC voters to be a laughing stock. He alone is responsible for this, far more than any other DC politician. |
Do you live in ward 8? |

What's Barry done for Ward 8?
Though it hardly seems possible, Ward 8 has actually become MORE segregated in the last 20 years, it's one the most segregated Ward in the District. Single moms and teen pregnancies have INCREASED in Ward 8, highest in the District. Poverty has INCREASED in Ward 8, as incomes have DECREASED in Ward 8. Number on food stamps has INCREASED, even as population declined. What's Marion Barry every done for anyone other than his friends and political cronies? He sure hasn't done anything for his constituents. |
| He has a captive constituency, and he preys on their dependency, just like a drug pusher would... |
Shouldn't matter. Council is supposed to be working for the WHOLE CITY. |
He hasn't done anything recently, but he has in the past when most people didn't care or want to live in DC. He is well past his prime and someone else needs to be elected in ward 8, but it's east to pick on Barry when you weren't living in DC for the last 20 years or more. At one time Barry was the only one that cared. As they say, you have to know your history. |
Ward 8 is one of the last affordable places to live in DC. It makes sense that the rate of poverty and "all of her cousins" would increase. The same can be said of certain parts of PG County. Where are the people to go after they sell you their grandmother's rowhouse in Petworth? |
| Ward 8 stands as a monument to all the reasons why people avoided or left DC. And in fact, those who can, still continue to flee Ward 8. Affordable living? What about jobs or other prospects? 3 hots and a cot is "affordable living" too, but who wants that? If the idea is artificially sustaining a populace, but nothing else, sorry, that doesn't cut it. |
You are not only naive but politically ignorant. |
