That's because of the late Labor Day. You'll have an extra week of summer at the end of August. |
Wow, and teachers work until the 27th - that's late! |
Duh. My bad. Must have been late. I was looking at 2015. |
| They moved one of the Strategic Planning days from earlier in the year to June 24th. On my draft, the 24th was going to be the last student day. |
| November 2,3 "can be half day conferences/touching bases". I'm a teacher and I hope they clarify for us. Expectations for those days were not clear this school year. |
|
Look, I grew up here and it has ALWAYS been an after Labor Day start. None of us have been hurt or damaged mentally because we went to school through most of June.
In fact, it's always been a positive- August is hot, the pools are open and the water is warm. Traveling is cheaper and getting that last week in at the beach when the crowds are gone and the rates are cheaper is great! I cannot even associate school in August in my mind, it's prime summertime! This is not whatever state you migrated from, this is VA and this is has it's been and should remain. Some years it's a later start in Sept, other years its not, but we always know it's right after Labor Day and it's a great closure to summer vacation and transition to the school year. Stop with the dramatics about a few days longer in June. |
+1 Another Fairfax native. |
| According to the School Board calendar they will meet Feb 19th to decide the 2015-2016 school calendar. It should be posted shortly after that. |

I value summer more in June b/c it's such a relief -- it's new and different. I don't value summer as much in August b/c I've had a lot of "summer" by that time. I'm ready to go back and the whole mood of the country is "back to school" in August. Seems like we are just waiting around while everyone else goes back to school.
|
We live in Fairfax County, VA. The "whole mood of the country" does not travel airborne, does the mood in Wisconsin bother you right now? What about the mood in Florida? New Mexico? Hawaii???
|
I don't know about the "mood of the country", but, as a teacher, I can tell you that the kids are ready to get out when the swimming pool opens. And, I think they are ready to come back in August. |
The "mood of the country" refers to places near and far -- i.e. Arlington, Montgomery, all of my relatives in other states (including Florida and the midwest), all of the national commercials (both print and television), all of the parochial schools in this are, etc. etc. The majority of the US will be starting in late Aug. We will be waiting until Sept. 8th. It's oddly late. By that time, "back to school" is no longer on anyone's mind. They are all collectively thinking harvest and fall... the bus has left the station (literally). |
|
For those of us from this area (and NY) harvest and fall mean back to school. We shop for back to school clothes which are jackets, long sleeve shirts and jeans, new sneakers not flop flops. August summer is not back to school time.
It's a great transition to the start of the school year. Flowers fade, leaves turn, another summer gone and now a new school year begins. Now while I'm opposed to starting before Labor Day for a traditional school year, I'd be okay with a change for a modified year round school calendar. At least then there would be plenty of mini breaks to look forward to and the beginning of the school year wouldn't be such a big transition. |
In the draft calendar, Arlington will start Sept 8 as well. Won't most of VA? |
