Your experience with Algebra 2.0 this year

My kid went from math 7 to algebra. Math 7 topics oscillated between algebra and geometry.

Teacher never mentioned IM.

Clearly another case of different clusters doing things entirely differently.

What grade was s/he in? My 5th grader is in math 7 this year and everybody in her class is going to IM. Only some of the kids in math 8 this year are taking algebra in 6th.

At my kids HGC, they took IM in 5th, Algebra in 6th, Hons Geometry in 7th, and Hons Algebra 2 in 8th

A couple of years ago in our HGC (in 5th grade) there was one class taking IM, another taking Math 7, one taking Math 6. The IM kids were recommended for Algebra in 6th grade, the Math 7 kids were all (except for one) recommended for IM

+1. Last year, many of the kids in my 5th grade child's Math 7 class got into the Takoma Park Math and Science magnet and they were all placed into IM.

The lowest math for the magnet at TPMS is IM

That doesn't make it 'remedial' Math surely. It is just the lowest level in a Math magnet which is full of kids who are really, really good at Math.

I hope MCPS finds a textbook or a study guide for Algebra 2.0
It was taught in different sequence depending on the school.
Just because a teacher can solve the problem does not equate to the teacher explaining the course. There are more and more advanced students going to tutoring after school. If not these tutoring companies would not be mushrooming right and left everywhere. Students do not admit to it. And the parents keep mum about it and would deny if you asked them.

No one said IM was remedial. They said its the lowest math you can take at the magnet at Takoma.

Guess you missed this..

There are levels of "Advanced English" classes at mcps middle schools based upon MSA performance. Maybe your child was in a basic class. And isn't IM math a class for kids who didn't do very well in math 7 and need more instruction before moving on to algebra?

My kid aced it. It was typical MCPS dumbed-down. Not nearly enough word problems. Easy grade but overall very disappointed.

I was actually happy to have my kid do it after Math 7 and before Algebra. She did ace Math 7 but although she found IM easy she was not bored and I was happy to know she was getting a year of pre Algebra. I'm hoping this will give her a more thorough foundation.

My kid aced Algebra I. IM was a complete waste of a year. If you pull out serious Algebra books and high school level Algebra I word problems, no one in 7th grade could get them. They teach for acing tests only. My kid is 12 and got a 99% on the final but still doesn't "get" real Algebra.

IM is a repeat of math 7, people.
