Your experience with Algebra 2.0 this year

The Takoma Park magnet math class is "Magnet Math 6" it covers IM and significantly more material. As its a Math, Science, Computer Science magnet program the material is significantly more advanced.

I agree with PP. the Algebra classes taught in middle school are too easy and really don't cover full Algebra I.

I have been wondering the whole year if my kids taking Algebra 2.0 were nothing more than guinea pigs. It seemed that the teachers were not highly trained in the new concepts and the book was useless for the course. Many nights my children came home without an example of how they were supposed to do the homework so the homework could not reinforce the concepts they were learning. Assessments swung back and forth from being ridiculously difficult to being simplistic as if the assessments had not been previously sampled. When the entire school did poorly, the test was rewritten and kids took reassessments that were easier than the original test.

I do have grave concerns that core Algebra concepts were lost in the rush to roll out a new curriculum. My oldest who thankfully missed this urge to reinventing the wheel had a much stronger foundation that linked to her higher level math courses.

I can only dread what they will do to Geometry 2.0 next year.

It doesn't matter whether your DD learned math or not. All that matters is that in the end everyone looked proficient. Another MCPS success story!

Oh good, now that I know that MCPS doesn't care if my child learns math or not, I can chuck out the summer MCPS math packet!

This is the first subject where I started to bomb in math. Previously I had skipped grades due to strong math skills. I ended up with a horrible case of math anxiety and did extremely average on the math part of the SAT while maintaining a nearly perfect verbal score.
