--pure breed pet. It's a rescue. I love the breed.
--Private school. Really? You think I'm sending my kids to private school to impress people? That's kinda nuts.
--Mass market luxury cars. We have those, but I like the way they drive. They're not meant to impress. They're very comfortable. Yes, there really is a difference between driving a Honda and driving an Audi.
--Vacation home in St. Barth. It's pretty there, and the kids can practice their French. It's not to impress, and we don't talk about it. Mustique, yikes. Can non royalty even buy there? Anyone can buy on St. Barth. Some prefer OBX, some MV, some Rehoboth. But Mustique??

I have to agree on the other stuff--no big logos, your clothing really shouldn't be a walking billboard for a designer. Labels belong on the inside. But if you like expensive stuff (and you can afford it), more power to you. I don't think everyone does things to impress others.

Oooh, I forgot one. I don't highlight my hair or get mani/pedis to impress, I do it because I look better that way! Nobody wants to see scraggly nails and my gray hair!

Try not to be such a sheep.

OK, why don't you tell me what you do/where you live/etc that makes you so much more unsheeplike than I am? Obviously I'm just following the herd and I couldn't possibly be doing anythiing for any reason other than to follow the herd. NOt that I have any idea what herd I'm following, but I'm clearly not smart enough to notice.

Hon, no one CARES if you have gray hair or scraggly nails but you. Stop trying so hard to impress people.

THat's crap. THere are plenty of threads on hre complaining about how nobody wants to see anyone's ugly gray hair, fa ass, scraggly nails, crooked teeth, etc. People care.

What a bitter nasty bitch you are. Clearly jealous.

Anyone I know that has a big, new house paid cash. Wish I could! Sorry for you that it is such a big deal to you.

You would probably die of shame if you ever heard how the Europeans trash the tanned, manicured, highlighted, tank-driving foreigners with their loud children speaking bad French. They can spot you a mile away. But good for you for trying to teach your children about different cultures.

I doubt I would die of shame. I am one of the Europeans, born and raised. I don't drive a tank. Manicure doesn't imply acrylics, for the record. You have no idea how well (or badly) my children speak French. They're dual nationals, and it's not their only language--they know plenty about other cultures.

I'm sure it made you feel better to picture your little sterotype, though. Perhaps you should go out in the sun, try to be happy instead of trying to put others down?

Could you define 'expensive'? Not trying to be snarky, just truly wondering. What's "expensive", in your book, for a pair of 6-year-old girl's sandals?

Agreed. Yup, I put my kid in target, tcp and osh kosh. And Payless shoes. I'm not wasting money on clothes and shoes that get trashed!

Only buy hannas when they are on massive sale.

No, a lot of the posters making snide comments are envious of the status symbols. That's why they're taking the time to make nasty remarks to posters who have them. Some of the things are bit over the top, but if it makes the owner happy, so what? Not everything is done with the intent to impress others. (Luxury cars? Nice to drive. Manicures? really? Lawn service? Who enjoys mowing?)

Flashy watch, maybe. THe other two? Nah. Especially the box seat. Good view and enjoyable. THat's not a status symbol anyone is trying to impress with.

NP. You know what McMansions are, right? It's a 10000 sq ft house on a little tiny piece of land - like what would look ok for a 1500 ft bungalow.

Yes, I suppose certain Europeans do highlight their hair and get manicures. Those people would certainly be very impressed with you. No need to be snippy because not everyone thinks you are as impressive. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think you and you family are the height of sophistication.

Anonymous wrote:Pure breed pets - there are so many unhomed dogs. If you truly want/like an animal, go to the shelter. If you spend more than $50. on a dog, you are just stupid. Foolish with money, and probably foolish about everything else.

Many rescue organizations charge adoption fees that rival buying a purebred.

I paid $150 for a shelter dog. I don't think you can get a dog for less than that, unless you do private party (like Craigslist or something).

There aren't many 10K SF houses on small lots. Most of the new houses are about 3000 to 6000SF. It's ok not to understand what you can't achieve.

This dog thread is a bit weird, really. It is great to adopt, no argument here.

Many people buy pure bred dogs for many reasons though. Some people grew up with a certain kind of dog and they like them. Some people are looking for certain traits in a dog that certain breeds offer. I can't imagine is someone going and saying "I am going to buy that chow because it is really going to impress the neighbors."
