I was thinking more Wes Anderson with a set and characters similar to Moonrise Kingdom, but yes, definitely like a quirky movie.

Take $200,000. Subtract one safari for 7 people = $45,000. Subtract summer camp @ 10k x6 x10 years...oops $600K... private school $20k x 6 = $180K. It si very easy to spend granny money on upper crust pursuits. Then add SN kids needs + adoption fees foreign county $30K each....

The eggs in the basket are supposed to be symbolic... (nest egg NOT?)

You've confused DF (family of 3) with the writer (family of 7).

Safari for 4 costs $60K easy (I know - we are going this year).

GASP! Shouldn't you be saving that money for your children to go to college?

According to some that's a waste.

We did a safari for less than 10 percent of that.

More waste that could be going towards college! (Sarcasm)

But seriously, do you safari families have $ for college put away?

Airfare alone is more than $6k. No way you did entire safari vacation for $6k unless you were living in Africa or such.

Their kids will get financial aid and they probably pay no federal taxes. The author has a 4 year degree that her grandparents paid for so she got to enjoy college while her kids will do work study and may have loans.

Recent college graduate here - my parents make about $60k a year and while I did get a good amount of aid in my freshman year, that dried up quickly and by the time I graduated I was receiving $0 in grants and the only "aid" I got was offered loans and federal work-study. This is all determined by FAFSA so it wouldn't have made a difference what school I attended.

Second, I now make $51k/year and I can guarantee you that I pay plenty of federal taxes.

You really have no idea what you're talking about.

Are you married with six kids? Do you have a mortgage? I doubt it. Both of those things are major tax deductions that generally result in paying very little in taxes. You are young still....please have some hubris and don't assume that you know everything.

PP you meant don't have hubris ...

Why the tent? You can spend the night in a dorm room when you visit colleges?

Do you really think anyone with 6 kids and earning less than $50k can afford to buy a house? No, they are 99% likely to be renting. Also, you have no idea how many siblings I have. Having a bunch of brothers and sisters may have gotten my parents a tax break, but it sure as hell didn't make a difference with my financial aid in college. You are old, but please don't assume you know everything either.
