oh, yep, sorry, wouldn't want to offend the Patricias of the world. I'll still drink a beer for them.

Yup. It's one of those words that is more often spoken so people don't even realize how it's spelled therefore how it could be offensive.

This
Never would have thought it a slur, but when I saw it written here it was suddenly obvious. I think this is the first time I've ever seen it written

I suspect the word is offensive to gypsies. I do not believe we have gypsies living in our area...aside from the ones who ce to the DC metro area each summer and break into homes.

+1 wow never realized "gypped" was a thing and definitely never used it in a slur-ish context. Oops.

I cannot believe the ignorance and bigotry displayed in this thread. For shame.

The only thing offensive to gypsies is alarm systems and barking dogs.

"Gypsy" actually derives further from "Egyptian" which they were called because of their dark skin and the mistaken belief they came from Egypt. Kind of like what happened with native Americans being called Indians. The term "gypped" was obviously brought here by Europeans, but is so far removed from its roots to be hardly offensive anymore.

We all say Redskins, which seems like a much more intentional slur.

I will also continue to use the phrase red-headed step child, call someone a bastard, eat Quaker Oats, enjoy a Three Musketeers bar, and drink beer on St. Patty's day.

Well, aren't you a brave person of principle.

To 20:50 - People aren't being racist. No one is saying cruel things about the Roma people...that would be racist. But making comments about the word gypsy which currently is interpreted to mean people who travel from place to place running schemes, scams and committing burglaries doesn't equate to racism. Gypsy isn't a race.

We don't all say it.

I don't want people saying "jew me down" so I try not to say "gypped".

and while I'm confessing my sins, I'll continue to use the following:

-sly as a fox
-dumb as a stump
-smart as a whip
-call someone "a Judas" or "Benedict Arnold"
-MacGyver something
-bat out of hell

No, Gypsy isn't a race. "Gypsy" is the word people in the US usually use to mean "Roma", although not (as I understand it) the word the Roma would like people to use. The fact that Fleetwood Mac had a song called "Gypsy" doesn't make this any less true.

well one of those certainly seems relevant if you don't see the difference between that list and "gyp"

A Paddy wagon is the police wagon that took away the druken Irish -- thus a Paddy Wagon.

Paddy is short for Padraic, Gaelic for Patrick. And I'm Irish and wouldn't even think of assigning a derogatory reference to the nickname, regardless of any history it might have. So many people need those huge chips knocked off their shoulders.

There was such a hullabaloo on Butter London's IG account this week as they named a nail polish Pikey. All hell broke loose defending those traveling crooks.
