| There is a small debate on the nanny forum about it. Has it "Evolved" to not be super offensive but only having offensive roots? |
| It is a racial slur. I replace it with "short changed" |
| It's a slur. |
| I have only ever hear it used as an example of an offensive slur. I think it is less offensive than other slurs, in that someone would use it as an example because they were trying to avoid saying more offensive slurs, but it is still quite offensive. |

wow, i never even thought of it that way. I've learned something new on DCUM!
I like "short changed." I will replace with that |
| I think most people who use it have no idea it is a slur. |
Yup. It's one of those words that is more often spoken so people don't even realize how it's spelled therefore how it could be offensive. |
This. I don't use it, but I generally assume those who do are just uninformed and not meaning to offend. |
|
I think it has evolved. I was on Babycenter, and they made a point about other words that have unsavory roots but are not marked as "slurs"

| Agree with PPs that it is a slur. |
| Wait, what? I haven't used the word in years, but when I was little my brothers and sisters used it. It's a slur? Yikes, I had no idea. What makes it a slur? |
Derives from the word Gypsy, which itself is a derogatory term for Roma people. |
| It is horribly offensive. |
| Ashley Wagner used that word at the Olympics regarding the judging of her program. |
