Why do you expect people to do hard labor for free, OP?
Now, if my neighbor was elderly, I'd probably tell my teen to go over and do it for free. But if they're entrepreneurial, more power to them. |
No different than calling a dispatcher for a taxi. |
Not the PP but I've always paid someone to do my driveway. My kid is 18 months so he can't do it the money we paid was totally worth it to have that extra time to just relax with DH. |

I'd be horrified to let a neighborhood kid shovel my driveway and sidewalk for free. I'm a lazy, entitled ass, so I paid someone to do ours. I was inside with a puking toddler and DH is out of the country.
It was tempting to leave the kid inside and escape to fresh air, but cleaning up the indoor disaster took precedence. But if I could have paid $60 for someone to clean up kid puke while I shoveled, I'd have done it. There were no listserv postings suggesting this arrangement would be amenable to anyone. |
| My thoughts? You shouldn't judge so much. Who the hell cares what other people do? Join in or ignore. But don't go around trying to work out what's the right or wrong way to raise kids. |

How else are kids supposed to make money? By shoveling snow in the winter and cutting grass in the summer.
I see nothing wrong with teens shoveling for money. In fact, I LOVE it. I always hire teens for the snow and grass cutting. I love that there are teens who are taking the initiative and actually willing to get off their butts and work for money instead of begging their parents. I do think it would've been much better for the parents to allow their teens to send out the emails and promote their own business. But in short, there is absolutely nothing wrong with teens being paid for their services. I've had adult neighbors shovel for me when they knew the hubby was out of town or working (the snow fell after he'd gone to work and since they were out doing their own they decided to do mine too). But I'd never expect teens to do that. |
| The teens aren't on the listserve themselves, and at least in our neighborhood, the parents gave direct contact info for potential customers. I don't see the problem. |
I just send my teenagers out to shovel our driveway then start on the older neighbors then help anyone on the street that needs it. They usually get paid in chocolate chip cookies.

Mine makes money by being a Ump in Little League. $25 a game for bases and $50 a game for behind the plate. He is 14 and made $1200 last year. |
| My middle schoolers made almost 200 each shoveling yesterday. |
|
My elementary-aged kids shoveled ours and elderly neighbors' walks and driveways yesterday for free. It wasn't perfect, but...
I was disappointed that most of the older neighbors had to depend on adults to help them out. The only teenagers I've seen have been in cars, driving out of the neighborhood. THAT I find disappointing. |
| Wow! Where do you live tat kids shovel for money? Most are too lazy. |
Get over yourself

Don't assume that those teens know those older neighbors and/or have relationships with them. Sorry, but that's just how it is. It's usually the adults who help one another out for free-whether they're helping out the elderly, single woman/mother, woman whose husband is away...They're being neighborly, and I really wouldn't expect teens to do that. Now if you're going to raise your children to look out for the elderly like that as teens, GOOD ON YOU! That's great. But most teenagers don't. They leave that stuff to the adults. (Remember the stories of the creepy old men in the neighborhood? You can never be too careful with your children. Most parents don't allow them to get too close to other adults.) |
Yeah, but those ump jobs are not easily accessible. A shovel and lawn mower, however, are. PS: Ummm...are they hiring? I could use a few extra bucks. J/k.
