OP - are you saving for retirement? Also remember childcare will soon go away which should save you what, $20K a year? |
| We make 175k with no children and feel like it's not enough, even though we have only ~2k of actual expenses each month (rent, cell phones, insurance, etc). I feel your pain OP! |
| OP here. First we do max out our 401. Here's a quick rundown of what we spend monthly. Mortgage 3000, childcare 3000, student loans 500, food and household/kids stuff 1100, utilies, cell phone, etc - 700, car gas - 300. Yearly expenses include car insurance, life insurance, 2 vacations, a bit of clothes, house maintenance/renovations, and maybe some furnitures. All added together is definitely over 100k but less than 150k |
| You guys must have some serious drug problems or spouses that spend without telling you. We make just under 200k (only 3rd year at that, gradually increased from under 100k in 06), have a 44k/year nanny, paid for years of ivf, 660k house in a great school district (vienna). We have increased our net worth 750k since 2006. We had no loans and have paid off both cars. We are incredibly fortunate to make 200k, it will allow us to live very comfortably, retire early, and probably leave millions to our children. I don't know what we would do if our income doubled, but I would hope we wouldn't go broke. |

We are about 160-170k hhi, depending on dh bonus. We have 1 soon to be 2 kids in daycare. Our mortgage on a th in ffx county is 2400/mo. The school pyramid is excellent. We have one small car payment. We carry a cc balance, but no student loan debt. We are only saving about 10% in our 401(k) and not much at all for college. We spend too much on food, I know. Our vacations are on the cheap bc my parents own a beach house.
We do have a large emergency fund if one of us were to lose a job. I think we are soon just ok, and we will really have to track our pennies when 2 go to daycare. That will be about 2500/mo. |
| We go on 0 vacations a year and eat out 0 times a week. My husband makes around 125 and I SAH with our 2 kids. |
My husband makes what you make and we save $2500 a month plus he slips me money. We have no kids, new home, paid off cars, no credit card debt. |
You are just barely getting by. Wow. |
...and eat a lot of crappy food from Costco |
Wow! Way to live large, dude. |
I'm impressed with this lady. She definitely has got it going on ! |
Me too! nothing wrong with living within your means and not being wasteful. We do many of these things too and our income is 3xs as much. |
I think so. We have $1.8M saved for retirement. $600k in house equity. Fully funded college for children. To boot. |

We are in dire straits because we are making under 200K.

They either rent or bought 10+ years ago, or live in an area with bad schools.
Mom stays at home, or grandma watches the kids, or they use a really cheap in-home daycare. They never eat out. They never go on vacations. |
