What to do if you suspect that a teacher is racist?

That's now how defamation works. The case would be dismissed as parents are entitled to their own opinions and can raise these issues privately. If they did it in a public forum like getting up in front of the PTA and giving a speech about a racist teacher well that might be an issue unless they could prove to the judge she is racist. If it's the truth, it's not defamation.

At our school, people have definitely spoken with the school counselor, and some have gone to the principal. The teacher in question is apparently very sweet and charming when speaking with parents, but is a screaming lunatic with the kids.

I would never allow my child to be in that class. Being subjected to that even if it's not directed at your child is extremely damaging.

My DC's preschool teacher was accused of racist and fired from her job. She was not the sweetest person on earth but she managed her class well, encoraged kids to read, had a small garden with flowers and herb for the kids to explore. There were a lot of colored kids in her class but two boys were particularly active. She always kept the two boys next to her and made sure they didnt bother other kids or running loose. There were no incidence of the boys hurt themselves ot hurt others. Two year after my DC left, I heard there was an very aggressive girl in her class so she often needed to tell that girl to stop interrupt other kids. The girl mom was not happy so she complained and got the teacher fired.
