What to do if you suspect that a teacher is racist?

My teacher is racist. She's the japanese teacher and is very rude to anyone who isn't asian...other students have noticed and yet she has still been working for 20 years. We the students can't really do anything abut it so we just switch out...

Racist teachers in MCPS is not a surprise. Even though some schools are diverse, the teachers are not. This progressive utopia that everyone raves about in MCPS is laughable because I have yet to see it. I can't believe that one of the most liberal counties in one of the most liberal states in the country has such a large element of racism within its schools. However, people deny that racism is a problem with "some" MCPS administrators and teachers.

S/O -- Why is it so hard for parents to register genuine concerns about a teacher? I have no idea whether or not the issues with OP's school and teacher are legit or not. We're dealing with a teacher situation and it is very, very frustrating. It seems that parents can have lots of concerns, kids can be very upset, patterns can be established and, yes, schools, principals and PTAs can know of bad behavior. Yet, silence. It seems that there is an entire system that is all about protecting teachers and the status quo, even when it means that kids will suffer.

The teacher union resembles the police union.

In some corners of MCPS the teachers do not reflect the culture of their students/customers. Bias abounds.

OP. I had a few of those when I was in school. Parents need to directly tell the principal. Even if you are of the race that she likes. Your child could still be harmed by her insecurities. Once you tell the principal, it will be fixed pronto.

One boy was crying everyday because she was so mean. The parents all brought these issues to the guidance counselor and principal's attention. My DD ended up with the same teacher and she was super nice to her. Same thing with a few of her friends (same race as us). DD said she was mean to some of her other friends (same race as the older kids who had a problem).

Do I say something to any of the other parents? One of my friends (race that the teacher may not like) was shocked that she was nice to my DD. At the time I didn't know why but there seems to be a pattern here.

We'e not in her class anymore but I have a younger child.
was the teacher mean because the boy did not get his way, is this a brat acting out?
Do not expect teachers to always have a good day and to be happy spending the whole day with a class full of kids.

My guess is all teachers are nice to a student if they know the family, and if the kid is pretty and dresses nicely and knows how to be polite to a teacher

I am a teacher and have been accused of being racist before. It is ALWAYS because the student or parent A. disagree with the grade the student earned and B. have zero evidence of any wrong-doing. It is always the last ditch effort by the kid parent "I disagree with the teacher, and I can't prove anything wrong has happened, therefore, the teacher is racist."

Careful. This is a hurtful label to put on someone.

As a teacher, I can honestly say, when I look out to my class of students, I do not see black, white, etc. I see "great kid. Hard worker. Lazy. Grade grubber. Doesn't shut-up..." etc.

Teachers are human and product of their environment too.

This experience will also teach something to your child.

Take. The petition to the principal and demand this racist teacher be immediately terminated. If the principal fails to comply with your community supported demands your next step should be to take it to the School Board.

You have the evidence and the teacher will have an opportunity to prove they are not racist.

Tread carefully because she could sue you into the poorhouse for defamation, possibly, in the event she is not a racist.

If this is in Alabama, your complaint may have some merit. File a formal complaint.

If this is in Maryland...the teacher may have a point. Investigate context a bit more, perhaps those kids do deserve the feedback they are getting.

+1. I wouldnt be surprised if teacher unions started suing some deranged parents for defamation.
