| How would you Californians rank Occidental among the various UCs? |
OXY is private not a UC. Very liberal, but there a much better schools much closer. |
Maybe it's because there are top notch students at other schools, too? Perish the thought. |
Darn. Wish I had known that. |
+1 Companies in SV also hire from local CSU state univ, like SLO, San Jose, Pomona.. It may not be the Googles of SV, but there are lots of other high tech companies there that hire people from the lesser known brand name schools. |
Even at googles, apples and other massive companies they will cast their net wider than ever due to sheer size. It isn't like a law firm or consulting firm where everyone comes from the same 10-15 schools. Now, on a team by team basis there definitely are differences (when looking at f500 recruiting). Certain teams definitely skew towards having people with similar backgrounds/certain schools. |
I'm guessing Google does more to SEARCH for talent than rely on USNEWS rankings. One of the founders was a Maryland grad. |
| UCSB has moved up substantially overall. Moreover, its selective College for Creative Studies is competing for top undergraduates nationally, such as in certain hard sciences where UCSB graduate schools are highly ranked nationally. The allure is opportunities for freshman to do original research with the possibility of being published -- essentially doing graduate school work while still fulfilling undergrad distribution requirements. |
| What types of students are heading their from the DMV schools? |
| I know a top math /science student from a DMV private there who will be publishing original physics research as a freshman (begun before the school year started under supervision of professors out there). The graduate school placement out of this CCS program into top 10 grad programs nationally evidently is most impressive (I have also heard that USB itself is number 10) They also have one of those pre-college summer programs to attract students before their senior year of high school. |
| Ok OP the best California schools are uc Berkeley, la, Davis, cal poly slo, Stanford. |
| It has the most awesome Halloween party! |
And Cal Tech. |
Pp here yes I forgot cal tech. I agree. |
But, OP, you can rule out Cal Poly SLO -- it's pretty much impossible to get in as an out-of-state student. It's the most competitive university in the Cal State system and the Cal State rules give preference to CA residents. So, there are no spots left for out-of-state kids. I went there and DS has said on visits that he wants to go there -- I've told him he'll have to look elsewhere...SLO is not happening. And even if he could I'm not paying out-of-state tuition when we have great state schools here in VA. |
