Tell me about UC-Santa Barbara

Both my husband and I are uc grads. We both have cousins who graduated and dropped out of ucsc. I'm sure that its a good school but among ucs it's not reputable- like uc riverside

Can someone please provide a rundown or ranking of UC schools? I can assume DD will not get into Berkeley or UCLA. And after those two, I don't know any distinguishing features of the other UC schools. (I'm another poster with a DD with solid but not outstanding credentials who doesn't want to be "stuck" going to JMU).

As a Californian in big law who went to a uc (and whos friends and family all went to various ucs) here is a local's view on rankings

What's your opinion on UC Santa Barbara? This thread seems rather negative but you seem to give it a decent ranking. Or maybe you wouldn't recommend any lower than UCSD? Thanks!

Does she plan on going to grad school? If yes, why not save money and let her live at home and go to a local public university. She can work on her grades and test scores and go big for a top grad school program. I don't see why you'd want to spend out-of-state money to go to any UC school besides Cal or UCLA unless you have a lot of money.

We have saved enough for her to go to the college of her choice. Her living at home while in college is not an option for us.

Santa Barbara was a party school when I was at uc. I don't think it is that way anymore but as you can see from this thread there is still that reputation. In my California high school, the best students went to ucb, ucla and ucd respectively. I will say though that within California successful people are generally from the top four ucs. That's not to say I don't know successful ucsb alums (I was married to one) but I don't know as many in my field. That being said I do know many ucb grads who work at coffee shops and the local whole foods so to me, the name of the school doesn't mean much. In general, uc grads do well. Ucs in general are well regarded in CA.

Yes - it is kind of ridiculous to call any UC "not reputable." They are all great universities. At my Californoa public high school the best students went to Cal or UCLA. The rest were all on the same tier together. Depended more on what you wanted to study and what lifestyle you were into than anything else.

I'm another UCSD grad who would be happy to send my kids to either UCSD or UC Davis - and, yes, I'd pay the high tuition and send my DD (who's interested in biology) to a UC before VT or JMU.

CA native here; I loved Cal Poly SLO. We used to party with hs friends at UCSB. There was A LOT of drinking and more of an out of control party scene there.
