New Englanders, are you from MA? Do you know Roche Bros.? It puts Wegmans to shame. Roche's is "still" family owned, and they don't have unnecessary crap in the store. It is only slightly more expensive, but actually justified.

You get what you pay for there! (Unlike Whole Foods/Whole Paycheck, for example}. I think it started in Wellesley, which is a gorgeous, uber rich {old money, truly} college and more town. A town that doesn't accept sub par anything. Very different than what others are used to and accept as status quo (sadly).

You think? My family used to go to the Roche Brothers in Acton. Great store, but I do prefer Wegman's. They renovated it a few years ago and it is nicer than it used to be. I actually don't get the whole "I'm a New Englander, Wegman's doesn't impress me" attitude. I think it is a nice grocery store and, all other things being equal, given a choice between it and Giant, I chose Wegman's. I live in Falls Church and, depending on traffic, I see myself driving a few extra miles to go to Wegman's occassionally. I do understand why people don't like the big box footprint and extra traffic. I don't want one to open too close to my house.

All you New Englanders, does anyone know Stew Leonard's? I am from here (Northern VA) but I remember going to SL's as a kid when we would visit my grandparents in CT.

PS Oh yeah, and Caraluzzi's! http://www.caraluzzis.com/

There is a world of difference in how Costco and Walmart treat their employees.

I live in Cleveland Park and make a Tyson's Corner trip about once every two months. I'll definitely plan to do other shopping at Tyson's and then go to Wegmans for a big grocery trip. Good produce, wide-range of fresh bulk products, and great prices on staples. I'm Wegmans is coming our way, though I do wish there were one in DC.

So I guess Columbia Heights (home of Target) is just another exurb? Or the Costco in Pentagon City ... makes it like unto Ashburn?

I don't know anything about the Target in Columbia Heights but yes the whole shopping center with the Costco in Pentagon City feels like you stepped into the exurbs. I hate it and never go there.

Pentagon City is an ugly concrete jungle.

I love the idea of Wegmans coming to Tyson's so I don't have to trek out to Fairfax once a month. I'm from NY (um, not New England) and I LOVE Wegmans.

Wegmans is also family-owned, BTW. It's been on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list since its inception in 1998 and in the top 10 for the past 8 years. They rock!

Have you ever actually done a price comparison? Because I find wegmans prices to be lower than Giant.

One example- Kashi granola bars
Wegmans: 2.99
Giant: 3.69

Their stores may be large down here and gave a more extensive prepared food section, but to say Wegmans caters to the rich shows ignorance. It's a family owned business founded in Rochester NY, which is as blue-collar as it gets.

Oops "gave" was supposed to be "have"

I don't shop at Walmart or Costco, but I do boycott Walmart. DC resident who doesn't believe price should trump production.

but keep paying the taxes to the welfare

Tysons, get ready for an influx of RVs camping overnight at your Walmart. Walmart is notorious for this. Maybe you should join the Walmart RVing Yahoo group in advance (yes, one exists).

We're already paying taxes to Walmart because they under-employ and under-ensure their employees. So, no, I don't believe in corporate welfare.

Walmart is going in where the car dealerships used to be... no biggie.

Thank goodness that McLean 22101 is not on that end. Far from it, but just close enough to stop by and pick up dinner at Wegmans.

The new Walmart will be about a block from the Great Falls/Wolf Trap neighborhoods, tho...

So it's not a *real* city, and is not populated by any *real* Scotsmen.

Because Costco is union and pay fair wages, not I need to get on Medicaid wages. Sorry you suck as a human being.
