You are 100% correct. Smart Sack is a Manna program and it relies on donations.

You either offer it to ALL kids in all schools or none at all. If we didn't have a million poor illegals now going to MC schools, the FARMS rates wouldn't be nearly as high. Take a look at the FARMS increase in the last 10 years to the 550% increase to illegal immigrant's children entering the schools district the past 10 years. It also affects teacher/student ratios.

When do you say enough with overtaxing us. School is school. Why not feed them breakfast, lunch, snack and send them home with a boxed dinner too? I guess parents can continue to be lazy while schools and out tax dollars are responsible for everything.

You need Jesus and I am not joking.

So if that person needs Jesus as you say, why don't you donate all of your money to schools to feed the poor you seem to be so religiously empowered to help. Some people have had enough of the handouts. Some people don't believe that illegal aliens are entitled to our tax dollars and others are screening their dollars appropriately to not get government handouts. If everyone is complaining about lack of compassion, take your earnings and feed these families. Sell your cars and house and live in an apartment to give more money back to the poor.

You all complain to be PC. To say you want to help. I call BS. If everyone who claimed they wanted to help actually helped, there wouldn't be classes of lower, middle upper. Stop fooling yourselves.

Well, it looks like you need Jesus too -- and when you get him I hope gets you a REAL GOOD PRESCRIPTION.

You do realize that:

1) every poor person is not an illegal immigrant

2) every immigrant is not illegal

3) every illegal immigrant is not poor

4) that every poor person is not lazy

5) every lazy person is not poor

6) your level of ignorance is AMAZING!

Gee whiz! Get off your soapbox!!!! We are talking about free breakfasts in the classroom!!! Is that REALLY where you want to fight your battle - about whether school age kids should get a cinnamon roll and milk every morning!!

I hope you have as much outrage about the corporate level handouts too -- the big banks and auto companies who got bailed out but the execs still got fat bonuses.

And FYI, I am neither a liberal nor a Democrat.

I have to pay for people to watch kids run around for half an hour (and pay for the playground equipment even)? Ridiculous.

You must be one of those elderly who live in a gated, child-free, nursely community in Florida! I know, I know, it gets less tolerant and more self-centered as you age...

Someone apparently missed the sarcasm bus...

But the US gives over $25 Billion annually in foreign non-military aid, most of it is food aid.

Seems kind of silly to me for people to be up in arms because free breakfast is offered to all kids in a school district - the local school district.

Enjoy your property taxes!

The PP here. I am fine with it because I feel that providing the free breakfast is a laudable use for my taxes. In my experience, a hungry kid is going to be less focused and could be more disruptive. That impacts the academic environment for my kid. So...if providing the free breakfast can improve the academic enviroment for all the kids, seems silly to fight a tax battle over this one.

The kids getting a free breakfast also get free food at home. Via the govt in food stamps and many of them also get WIC (goes up to 5 years and provides food once the kid is off baby food). The parents at home may squander the food, eat it all themselves, sell their foodstamps, etc. I am all for scaling back the food program to just lunch and putting the responsiblity back on the parents to provide food at home. If they don't. so be it.

The school needs to stop sending the message to kids that they as the school are resposnible for their basic needs. It feeds the cycle. Tell the kid "your parent is responsible for you being hungry. They choose not to feed you. Sorry." And if the school knows this, it should contact social services and let them figure it out.

I guess that punishing parents is more important than making sure that children don't go hungry?

In my idea of a civilized society, all children have enough to eat, no matter who their parents are.

Are there really people out there so bats hit crazy that they object to feeding children? Good grief.

Food stamps do not cover the actual costs of groceries- they only cover a portion.

Who cares? Enough of this politically correct crap. The food at schools are overly processed, full of sugar and carbs. Why should taxpayers pay for that slop for all the kids. 90% of the kids in my son's school bring a lunch. What is wrong with parents these days??

Obviously, you live in a wealthy area if 90% bring lunch. You are greedy and selfish for not wanting to share your wealth in the form of taxes so children (much worse off than your own) can have breakfast in the am.

One of the few smart people on this post. Exactly.
For all the thing the taxes in our county pay for...I do not mind this one at all.

These kids did not select their parents. Let's not punish them.
