Free breakfast in the classroom

Anonymous
My child will be attending a school in MCPS that has a high FARMS rate. The principal said that the school provides free breakfast to all students in the classroom (even students who do not qualify for FARMS). Does anyone know what the breakfast consists of? Do your kids like it?

There should be a breakfast menu that comes along with the lunch menu. My kids eat neither the breakfast or lunch so I don't pay attention to what is served. It is probably on-line somewhere.

I am wondering if it's the same as the regular MCPS breakfast. In the cafeteria the kids have the option of also buying cereal, etc. I would like to know what will be delivered to the classroom under this program.

It's not the same as the other breakfast menu that is online--at the school where I taught, some common options were:

scrambled eggs rolled up in a tortilla
bagel with cream cheese
french toast sticks
some kind of breakfast sausage on a crossiant

There is always milk and juice.

There is only one choice every day. Kids can either take it or leave it.

Oh, and Fridays were that cinnamon roll...so it looks like some of those menus overlap, but for example, I never saw pancakes in the classroom--too messy.

This is exactly what is served in my daughter's classroom, on a rotating basis. A cart comes around and offers the item + beverage to each child. There is about 15 minutes to eat, in the classroom. It is not served in the cafeteria.

Thank you!

I didn't know they did this! What is the FARMs rate needed for ALL the kids to get breakfast? I know ours is pretty high, so wondering of DD will get a free breakfast. Super convenient.

Now we are providing free breakfast to kids who have no financial need? Great use of tax dollars, but hey, as long as it is convenient for you...

BTW, nothing in life is "free". Your fellow taxpayers are paying for your kids breakfast. This is great for kids whose families have financial need and I support it wholeheartedly, but should not be for everyone. Feed your own kid and I'll feed mine!

They do that at title I schools.

I don't know why you are upset at the families who have no need. They did not set the policy. They have no choice.

Yes it's a Title I school.

It's called Maryland meals for Achievement. You can google it to find participating schools.
