DD is intrigued regarding USC. What can you say about it?

it's in a ghetto. Housing is gonna be an issue.

New Poster here. We visited U of SC and although the school seemed nice, our DC didn't want to apply because the school is located right in the city.

Clemson has a beautiful campus, a great football team that makes the town the largest city in SC on game day, and a Greek system that isn't the entire social structure.

Color is orange though so won't work for OP. Neither will LSU (purple). Or Princeton but that's not a state school.

How is it that every college thread brings out the JMU cheerleader? Even when the thread relates to colleges out of the state of Virginia? It seems the JMU booster feels she has something to prove or excuse.

Ugh, what!? First off this is my very first JMU post ever on any website ever. An yes, I love JMU because its truly an awesome school with do much going for it. I also didn't read OP's post closely saying they were from VA. I'm from Maryland. It's out of state for us. So sorry to ruin your night over this. Did you ever honk there might be tons o people who love this school? What a concept.

Oops not "honk". Supposed to be think. Damn autocorrect.

Op does not say she lives in VA. How do you know JMU is not out of state for her?

How do kids/parents usually travel from DC to Clemson?

No kid at Clemson, but I did grow up in Greenville (which is a GREAT town).

There are direct flights to GSP from both Dulles and National on UAL and USAIR respectively. Southwest also started flying direct into GSP from BWI which has brought down airfare big time.

+1 Duuuuukes!

To the PP, there is more than "JMU cheerleader" on these boards. It's a popular OOS option for Maryland kids, not to mention that there are a lot of alumni in the Metro DC area, especially in Fairfax County.

Sadly, Harrisonburg is the pits, the climate is too yuck, they're purple, too many neighbors go there, the sports are too lame . . . . But the tuition is just right.

Well I wouldn't want to live in Harrisonburg now as an adult. But I went to JMU and absolutely loved it. And when the weather was warm the Blue Ridge area had so much outdoor stuff to do. Couldn't care less about the colors but the sports are great. I would love it if my DD would choose JMU. Some of the best days of my life. Awesome, awesome school. Yes, I'm another JMU cheerleader!

I heard that on a warn day there was some overwhelming odor of a chicken plant or something. Oh and that the students play chicken by racing across the train tracks, or maybe it's rt 81, before oncoming train or traffic hits them.

colorado-boulder is a great school. why are people rejecting it? All the people i've known that went there are quite successful now and they had a happy experience compared to many of my friends who went to much 'higher' ranked schools.

Because most of the kids I know from here who have gone there have flunked out. Really. Obviously there are going to be successful grads from there, but the temptation of parties and skiing seem to be too much for the kids we know from here. Obviously if you are from CO it would be a totally different story.

I guess it depends on the kid.

As a college student you can find plenty of ways to waste time regardless of where you. I was a pretty straight and narrow kid and I almost flunked out of undergrad because I hated where I was. My sister on the other hand smoked copious amounts of pot on a virtually daily basis and even dealt it at her top-10 LAC and landed great internships every summer on the way to an awesome position in silicon valley (she had ok grades but is an insanely good networker).

Looking back, fit and happiness is everything. Just because you go to Ivy-esque places doesn't mean MBB-consulting, bulge bracket i-banking/trading, or silicon valley corps are going to take you 100%. If my DC's want to go to colorado and they can maintain decent grades in a semi-marketable major, then I wont care if they ski and smoke a bit of pot to enjoy themselves.

That's crazy that you know many kids who straight up flunked out of UC-Boulder. Were they huge partiers from privilege to begin with or were they pretty sheltered kids who just went out of control because they never experienced that kind of atmosphere before?

U of Miami in OH
U of Texas
Berkeley
UNC
UVA
Wm + Mary
U of Cincy (top architecture program and top music program)
UCLA
UC system of CA (sev'l of the schools such as UC -San Diego)

good list.

I'd add Penn State (i know i know shit press, etc) is decent as well and has extremely good recruiting for its reputation. Ridiculous amount of PSU grads in the Bos-Wash area in a lot of industries and On-Campus Recruiting is comparable if not better than many on your list.

At least it's not a commuter school like mason, your alma mater.
