School Without Walls Pk-12?

Anonymous
Eastern claims they are at full capacity with IB students (opposite of what I had heard through the grapevine). Remember, it is just 9th and 10th right now, so the school profile stats don't tell the full picutre. They say they'll be completely full, and all in-bounds, when they are 9-12 in fall 2014. I'm not sure where all the IB students are coming from, but this is what I heard directly from Eastern administration.

The proposal is stupid. Why would you ever put high school students in the same building as pre-k?
Anonymous
...uh...some private schools have pre-k thru 12 on the same campus, like Maret, British School, etc... what's the big deal with that?
Anonymous
Doesn't cap city have pre-K though high school?

Hello,

I am a current FS parent. The idea from the EngageDCPS posting did not come from a current parent. I would encourage folks speculating about this "merger" to do a little more fact finding about both schools before passing judgement. We are not trying to push for automatic enrollment to SWW, however, these postings seem to suggest that all FS students are not worthy. As a parent in the early childhood program, we really enjoy the relationships we've built with all students and would like to see all students succeed in their endeavors. Just like most folks on this listserv, we are waiting to learn of the details about this co-location/merger/whatever you want to call it.

P.S. We are to be a PS (pre-school) through 12 not PK (pre-kindergarten) or K (kindergarten). Again, please be accurate in your postings.

I really do not see any benefit to sww in this plan. It really isn't feasible to use the top floor for classes when the main campus is not a short walk. See doesn't even gain the athletic space b/c it will be shared w the younger grades. School should have been closed and given outright to sww. Kaya screwed this one up.

So... what? Hooray? Ooops? Good luck?

Not sure what you're looking for. A backdoor into SWW is a non-starter, but FS students would probably be a convenient community service project.

Most of the TT do not. They break up the campuses.

nobody is suggesting that no FS student should get into walls. What is being suggested is that there is no sensible rationale for the merger of two such different schools, and this is rather more likely to harms SWw than FS. I am also sure you understand that the folk on these boards have more interet in a city wide selective high school (which many mAy hope their children get into), than a neighborhood Ps-8 school which is significantly under enrolled and attracts very few in boundary students outside of early childhood.

If Columbia Heights can have their own education kingdom, then so can SWW. More students equate to more funding and more offerings.

A letter was sent to the Chancellor from students at Walls and it reads as follows:

"Dear Chancellor Henderson,
The Freshmen Class of School Without Walls wish to advise you of our disproval of your proposed plan to merge FS & SWW. Part of what makes our school special is that we accept only the best students from across the city. Another quality is that the students here, being generally intelligent, are given freedoms and rights that we would not have in our feeder schools. We use the city as our classroom. Many of these qualities that make our school unique and one of the best in the city will be taken away if this plan involving sending our students to Francis goes through. Our "School Without Walls" will be given "Walls", so to speak, taking away our unique outside of classroom experience. The merge would also disrupt and tarnish the comunical bond built at our school. That is why, on behalf of our fellow students, We ask you to please reconsider this plan."

My HIGHSCHOOL is One of the highest performing school in DC and the country. My HIGHSCHOOL also has a 100% Graduation & College acceptance rate. I would love to keep it that way.

Am I the only one who is still totally confused about what this actually means. I got this from Jim Graham, which only confuses me more...

Dear Friends,

I’m delighted to share with you the good news that Francis-Stevens Educational Campus (FSEC) will expand to include grades 9th through 12th. The school currently offers pre-K through 8th grade. The expansion will make Francis-Stevens the only DC public school serving all grades!

Francis-Stevens is recruiting students for the 2013-2014 academic year. Ms. Olivia Chase, an FSEC Local School Advisory Team Member, will conduct a recruitment event in Ward 1 at Martha's Table’s Child Development Center at 2114 14th St. NW on January 28. The event will begin at 4 pm.

If you have recommendations for additional recruitment event locations, please contact Ms. Chase at oacfromdc@hotmail.com

Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham

Dying to know what a "comunical" bond is.
