Now that the benefits of a 2nd language - any second language - are established, do you think that means the SELA hate will stop?

Sela BS again? Don't you have anything else to do?

Hee hee PP you don't know the half of it wait til you get to pgs 2-3 and see they're all about Sela BS. Sigh apparently the answer to your question is "no".

Main take-away from article is: learn whatever second language you/ your kids are more likely to speak over many years/ decades. Spanish seems the obvious choice to most of us living in the US, followed by Mandarin. What else will depend on our family roots and the future careers we envision for our kids.

I hope at some point they study the effects of kinda sorta knowing a language (i.e. having been very conversational at some point earlier in life, then slacking off big time for years, but still able to adjust back into the "bilingual mode" if inserted back into that language environment for a little while). I have been meaning to re-connect with a language I once spoke well, wonder if that will keep away the Altzheimers a bit too? Here's hoping.

The more mental stimulation via novelty and challenge, the better to ward of Alzheimer's symptoms. Look up cognitive reserve.

Somewhat OT but did they ever prove/disprove whether that number crossword - what was it called? It was in ALL the magazines for awhile - did they ever decide whether that helped with cognitive reserve? Soduko or something like that...

Within the 1st 4 posts, there are 2 positive mentions of Sela and no negatives. Then post #5 asks "Now will all the Sela hate stop?" and THAT is what sparked the conversation about the negatives.

It's simply not true that the negative Sela posts just explode out of nowhere in each thread. The negatives are responding to previous posts.

Try it, link to one single thread where the 1st mention of Sela is negative?

WTF...look at the first negative Sela post in this thread: 01/10/2013 19:06 - that's before the person referenced the Sela hatred. Jesus, take the wheel!

Jesus has nothing to do with this. 19:06 was replying to 19:03 who asked if people would stop hating on Sela.

Now now Sela-Boosters! You're just adding fuel to the fire if you can't read posts in order. Tsk tsk, you sure you don't wanna go back and revise that statement, since it's, well, ridiculously wrong?

Are you feeling fevered? That post accuses Sela of lying. That's completely negative!

If the poster actually believes Sela posters have a tendency of lying or exaggerating how is that negative. It is what it is. Frankly, I too am tired of reading about Sela being a member of DCI. They are not. They might become one in five or six years, but they currently are not a founding school of DCI. Yet, Sela boosters have taken over the DCI thread about their admittance. Is that a lie speaking truth.

I actually believe you would benefit from lithium...negative? I'm sure you think so, but I actually believe it (just like the Sela conspiracy theorists). The only people that hijack threads are these odd Sela bashers - and the reason why you do that, I guess is between you, your conscience, and your god, to the extent you have either of the last two.

Too much fake hype, too many assumptions of success stated as fact.

Honestly, I think you are just an anti-charter operative.

My kid goes to another charter school so I am not vested in Sela. However, I cannot believe the animosity toward anyone rooting for their charter school here. Sure Sela is not open, but the fact that the school is approved shows that there has already been a lot of hard work and thought put into the school. Consequently, it is not unreasonable to think Sela will likely prove to be a good school. It is possible Sela will fail, but the fact that it has already jumped through many hoops successfully gives one hope for its success as a school.

Extremely poor taste to make jokes regarding lithium and mental health. Extremely poor judgment to deny what is objectively obvious t anyone who goes back and read this thread's first messages. Sela boosters, you're hurting sela's public image beyond belief: if you're behaving in such stupid ways here, I can't imagine what you're doing in less transparent fora.

It's a good thing you're not vested in Sela and you're not one of the people Sela is counting on to advance their exposure, because they need people on their side who can see that there is a concrete negative consequence - NOT for being excited about the school, but for being so excited you fudge the details of what level of interest there is or of what decisions have already been made about its future.

You obviously don't see that, because you called PP an "anti-charter operative" (which is ludicrous because one factual statement about what's happened on this board does not = being anti-charter, not by a long shot) when what they said is at the basis of the animosity is true.

So, ok, you're not vested, that's probably good for Sela. Because they're going to need more people who see that being honest about where the school is and not acting like it opened 3 years ago is really important towards building credibility and support. For ever person who actually posts on these boards, there are many more just reading. Some may see these exchanges the way you do (nothing but un-provoked Sela bashing), but many will see it as we do: over the top exaggerating which is annoying at best, turning away would-be applicants at worst.

Whack-a-doodle do! What is "objectively obvious" to you is pure fiction to others. Go back to trashing Basis or ratting out Maryland parents to the Charter Board. As you point out, Sela's not open, so who is this conspiracy of boosters? Right, anyone who says anything nice about them or expresses a hope that they will be in DCI, or points out illogical negativity about Sela as a new charter...Gotcha
