Looking at Charter schools- are white students a minority at all the schools?

This. It's a sad reality that a lot of folks look at a city where the wealthy are pretty diverse, but all the poor people are AA, and see a city where "all AAs are poor." If everyone with a HHI under $60k disappeared tomorrow, we'd still have a very diverse city.

In DC, yes, white students are a minority at all the schools. That's because DC is still predominately black. Having grown up here, I've never seen a high number of low-income whites in this city. It leads me to believe that there are probably more affluent whites who can afford to send their kids to private than there are affluent blacks.

As a result, you get the inverse in the charter school realm: Lots of blacks, very few whites. That'll change as gentrification has its way.

I beg to differ. There are many many affluent black people in the city. Of which I am one. As are all of my neighbors. The difference is that there are just more black people here, therefore, there are more poor black people here. It's not that there are more affluent whites.

The census doesn't support your assertions, 2nd PP. affluence is more prevalent in absolute numbers among whites vs non, (200>100) and absolutely as a percentage of the group as it appears in the pie chart of DC demographics.

Conversely, the percentage of white families that fall below the poverty line is something like 1% in the 2010 census.

The district is a weird bird, demographically.

No, actually PP is correct. You've just misread their point. When compared to the US population at large, "it's not that there are more affluent whites" in DC. AAs make up roughly 12% of the total population of the US. If 2 in 10 affluent DC residents are AA, that means AAs are over-represented as a share of DC residents. IOW, there are fewer affluent whites by percentage when compared to the nation at large.

Well, I guess we're just poor white trash by this definition

I do get the feeling that many of my child's charter school classmates' parents make a lot more than we do. I suppose it could become an issue as my child gets older, but then again some of those kids will end up leaving and making room for more kids from middle-class and impoverished homes I suppose.

It's only an issue if you make it one. We are clear with our kids from an early age: This is Our family. This is how we do things. Other people may do things very differently. But this is how we are, and there's nothing wrong with being us.

There are not enough whites in the school system to make them a significant majority at any school. It is just not going to happen in this city. Again, by the time a white couple has their 2.5 children in a 5-year period, the AA family will have about 4 children in the same time period.

You're assuming that those 7.5 children will be uniformly distributed among charters, PP. Charters can't be selective, but the families who enroll are self-selecting.

In terms of demographic trend, DC is getting close to the brink of no longer being majority AA. It stands to follow that the same will happen with its schools.

I realize that the thread started off addressing charters, but when you say "system" it sounds as if you're including all of the District school system in that comment. (?)

If you are lumping DCPS into your assessment of "not going to happen," may I remind you of: Janney, Mann, Key, Lafayette, Murch, and Stoddert.

People: Quit trying to judge a school based on the race of the children in the school. That is racism. Even in DC.

Nonsense; in a city where white with school-age children means upper-middle-class is almost every case, and few high-income AA bother with DC public schoools, race and SES invariably go hand in hand where school demographics are concerned.

Nope^^ still rascist. Things change. Middle class black families come back to schools and white families fall on hard times. If you are concerned with socio economic status: analyze that. Otherwise: rascist.

Not racist- REALIST!!!... But sad just the same.

Not realist. Rascist. My kid was the only white student in her class and she was almost surely in the bottom third by income. So you making assumptions about ses by skin color? Rascist.

Now this is Racist. Unfortunately, my timing was off. I'm AA and I didn't get the 4 children or the 2.5. Only had 1. I need to get my DNA checked.
