Looking at Charter schools- are white students a minority at all the schools?

OP, I think your answer has been given. I recommend not re-opening this thread.

No. Exhibit : all of close-in Bethesda and Chevy Chase is all white elementaries with just a smattering of adopted Chinese girls, some Indian children of NIH researchers and some Spanish visitors here with IMF - world bank who live in condos along Willard Ave. So you'll see stats like 5% Asian at places like somerset and Bradley hills.

Actually, given that this is an anonymous forum, I can totally see someone asking OP's question in earnest. If you want it for free but don't want to have to "mix", why not ask this question? OP is probably shocked that there are schools considered awesome and hard to get into that are actually majority kids of color.

I think OP is serious. Therefore I'm hoping OP has slunk off and away from any charter school applications. Win-win!

If you want "lily-white" go to upper NW or go private. Better yet, go to Fairfax or Montgomery County.

Someone who says "at best 33% white" is not even looking for "Benetton" schools. They're looking for a free, high quality, lily white school.

OP do yourself a favor, move in-bounds for a JKLMM school or go private or leave DC. You won't like your charter school if you stay here, and the kids and parents who appreciate diversity/desire diversity will not enjoy having to deal with you being miserable and worried that there are too many non-whites in your kids' school. It will suck for all of us.

So, 66% AA is apparently what qualifies as "lily white".
With that statement, thousands of AA students suddenly, magically became white.

Um, no, not at all. OP was dismayed that the "best" s/he was seeing was that charter schools were 33% white "at best", and was asking if this was accurate because, yikes, then s/he wanted nothing to do with DC charters. It does NOT make the other 66% lily white. Try reading the original post for context, it's always a good place to start when replying to a thread.

True spoken words of someone who has NEVER been to EITHER location.

OP didn't say "at most 33%" she said "at BEST 33%."

The Devil is in the details.

I'm willing to bet OP *thought* s/he meant "at most," but had a freudian slip and said "at best." LOL.

Maybe OP saw Waiting for Superman and thought there were DC charters that would take their low-track white child.

Or maybe OP is a minority with a white-looking mixed-race child who doesn't want their child to be "the one" white-looking face.

Or maybe OP had trouble reading the pie charts, bar graphs, and % signs.

Or maybe. Wait, what was the point of the question OP?

OP you have really stepped in it.

OP, my heart goes out to you. I once asked a question about potty training and someone accused me of being a pedophile. You never know what you're gonna get on this site.

In DC, yes, white students are a minority at all the schools. That's because DC is still predominately black. Having grown up here, I've never seen a high number of low-income whites in this city. It leads me to believe that there are probably more affluent whites who can afford to send their kids to private than there are affluent blacks.

As a result, you get the inverse in the charter school realm: Lots of blacks, very few whites. That'll change as gentrification has its way.

I think the PP meant all charter schools--which was the OP's original question.

I likewise fail to see how a 33% white population makes a school "lily white".

Unless OP lives in upper NW, or upper caucasia/JKLM/West of the Park or whatever you want to call it, chances are her local DCPS is way less white than whatever charter they might luck into. Something tells me they won't be applying to the schools where their DC will be "the only." And to be fair, neither did we.
