Disappointed with baby's gender?

Anonymous
I think if you feel like there may be a chance you or your spouse will be disappointed in the gender of the baby, you shouldn't find out before the child is born. When the baby is born, you'll fall in love, regardless of the sex of the baby. And, I think if the baby is "what you wanted" you'll feel an extra bit of happiness thinking that you knew all along.

Hi, OP here. Thanks for the views. I believe my husband's disappointment is now turning into guilt over us having a girl. I know he's trying to come to terms with it, and he doesn't blame the baby, but himself

I think, in our case, it is better to find out the gender early so that we can be mentally prepared - I imagine my hubby would be pretty disappointed at our baby's birth (and perhaps, shocked too), to find out that it's not a boy. I don't want the baby to start out in life with an aloof parent.

OP-- report back here in 6 months. I guarantee your DD is the apple of your DH's eye.

I am horrified to remember this, but with our first I was stunned to find out it was a girl. I had really wanted a boy (very close to my nephews, and I always thought girls were bratty/chatty/dainty). I wanted the baby to be healthy, of course, but I also felt somewhat resentful for a while - weeks? - that this girl had the audacity to implant herself instead of the boy I had imagined. By the time she arrived, though, I had adjusted and was excited for a girl. Now of course she's my reason for living and I can't imagine her being anything other than exactly what she is - and in fact I was even relieved with the second turned out to be a girl too! Girls rock.

We adjust our expectations. Give him some time. He'll be thrilled eventually.

I totally don't understand this thread. You don't get to have a preference--it's out of your hands and thinking you prefer one or the other is just silly! You wanted a baby, you get a baby! You don't get to select the gender any more than you get to select the baby's personality or hair or eye color. Getting a gender "surprise" is lesson #1 in parenting--you don't get to control everything anymore. Grow up, people.

As a single mom i absolutely wanted a girl. I adopted. I was not going to take any chances.

You resurrected a seven year old thread to say this?

You are a horrible person. Your child knew how you felt.

OP my Dh wanted a boy. When DD was born he was soooo excited.
At the sonogram for DD 2, he asked the tech are you sure? what are the chances you are mistaken?
DS (child 3) yes a boy shock! I just wanted a healthy third.
He loves all three, but DD1 is his fav.
Don't worry- the love is there.

It's so weird how people do this and are so oblivious.

It's so weird that you even have an opinion about it, at all.

I was upset upon finding out I was having a boy. I really wanted the closeness of mother/daughter.

Now with my baby boy, I ADORE him beyond comprehension. Cannot overstate how happy I am.
