Ask your magnet school kid if they can define "gentrification".
Nice of you to slum for art and gym. Magnet is more "elite" than private.
I know - you don't get it. I am not going to convince you - enjoy your elite education but it is not a public education - one that is equally open to everybody.
What's your point? The thread is about various the reasons why OP, and presumably other PPs, would choose public schools despite their experience with top private schools. Preferring a magnet to private school is perfectly consistent with explaining why someone would chose public over private. I can't figure out why you're griping.
How many non-magnet local kids are given the opportunity to take magnet classes.
I live the facts but I don't pretend it is the same as going to public school all regular classes. It is elite -it is a great education - it is not equally open to all kids.
Apparently you don't "live the facts," or you'd know that at Blair, a non-magnet kid can take many of the magnet classes as long as they meet the prerequisites. We know lots of kids who have done this.
As for the douchey parents, they also make douchey kids. I went to one of the "big 3" for high school. I think someone would have to pay me to send my kid to school at one of those places.
When I think of how my elementary/high school affected my university education and actual life I get a little chortle.
'Big 3'?? I had to google it to even know what that was. It's sad/lame that there's a short form to refer to certain schools! Hope it makes the users feel cooler and more relevant.

My friends who went to public (granted they are self selected from my Ivy and work contacts) are just as smart and successful as my Big 3 friends. Those schools are status symbols for the parents. Bottom line. It wasn't that way back in the 80's when I went, but it absolutely is now.
I wonder if you realize what a gigantic douchebag this post makes you sound like?
Funny, I thought the douchebag part of that post was this:
(live in Potomac so great public, but never considered private)
I thought the gratuitous Ivy reference was the douchiest part, but I see your point.
NP. Funny. I thought the last 3 posts were the douchiest part. What's douchy about pointing out that the quality of private education isn't any better than public? What's douchy about pointing out that some (not all) are total nightmares? What's douchy about pointing out that public school kids are just as successful? What on earth is douchy about pointing out that Potomac public schools are great? From our experience with area public and private schools, OP is right.
you're all totally missing the point - though the one right above me is totally ON point. what's douchy about pointing out that the quality of private education isn't better, and that the public school kids are just as successful, if not more? that's all i meant. i was saying (not OP, btw, but the person whose posts are quoted) that the people i know that went to public school received just as good an education, if not better, than i and my big 3 friends did. one could make the point, which is what i was addressing, that my big 3 background allowed me to go to an ivy that allowed me to meet the 'best of the best' from public schools. so maybe my friends aren't the best indicator of the average public school kid. that was totally misinterpreted, so maybe i worded it wrong. that said, there are plenty of people in excellent MoCo and NOVA public school districts who still send their kids to private school, for whatever reason. i'd never be one of them, even if i weren't fortunate enough to live in the district i do (again, only mentioned that because it wouldn't be fair to say everyone should make this choice). the big 3 schools aren't better for the vast majority of kids, period.
