Has DCUM been invaded?

Anonymous
Regardless of whether/how much the site has changed, if you fit the stereotypical DCUM demographic, you can usually tell the posts that are from outside that demo. I just ignore those. I, too treasure the elitist bubble in which DCUM exists.

Sorry you have to deal with drivel that is not in the top 1% and/or not Ivy educated. I would like to thank the elite for running the country into the ground, except for you of course. Enjoy your gated communties and armed guards in the future.

Yes, but this used to be a site where well-educated people would write thoughtful and useful responses that generally could be trusted to be true. Now it has become (for me) much more a site for entertainment, as there are so many less educated people posting.

YES, yes, yes!!!! The poster demographic has shifted down, wayyyy down.

I'm not top 1% or actually 5%, nor am I ivy-educated. I'm also not a raging democrat (though am liberal on social issues and am a feminist for sure). But I do come to DCUM so I can get the perspective of other women "like me" - not talking race but who are educated, professional (whether they SAH or not, they were likely working in a professional job pre-kids), living in the area, etc.

Like others have no doubt mentioned (didn't read past page 1) the rest of the web is out there. I come here for that reason.

Depends on how you interpret the posts. I am well educated but sometimes respond like an idiot just for fun.

Yes, and it would be nice if DCUM didn't sink to the absolute dumbass cesspool that is the commentary on much of the web. Like unmoderated comments on Yahoo news stories - shudder.

This is an elitist bubble? I hadn't noticed. My bad.

Forget about the 1% DC elitist bubble. To me it seems like there have been a fair number of posters from outside the US who see this site as a way to practice English for free or something.

Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. But when you get a completely uniformed post in mangled English about something that's supposed to be going on in MoCo, but the geography and other obvious facts are totally messed up, it's a little disheartening.

OP, I am an outsider but I can actually see your point. You come to this site to hear from like-minded people who share your surroundings. I don't actually think that's elitist. If my town had a similar blog and the majority of the posters were not from here, I would be annoyed too.

I found dcum because we might be moving to the DC area, so a search for a DC real estate forum brought me here. Most outsiders end up here just because they googled some random parenting topic. This is the most active message board I have ever visited, so it does become addictive. It's incredibly active and entertaining because it's anonymous. We can post without having to take the time to sign in, and we can post whatever we want without having to worry about our comments being inconsistent with our previous posts. If you found a way to make it strictly DC, you would lose a lot of that, so be careful what you wish for, OP!

Maybe Jeff would consider starting a separate forum just for DC people where you actually have to sign in to post?

Hate to burst your "demographic bubble," but indicating that you prefer to share your opinions with only like-minded people does sound elitist. Having said that, I can appreciate that you'd like to get opinions from other parents and residents of the greater DC area. Although I no longer live in the area, I only respond to posts that are more general--like cooking, national politics, special education, etc.

I have been reading this site for 2 years. I stayed for the drama. Sometimes that's baby mama drama, but more often it is 250k financial aid for preschool drama.

People love to be nosy, which is why they are here.

But the snarky, smug, idiot who keeps posting jabs is of no help to anyone. She is easily identifiable and I just hope people keep ignoring her. She sounds extremely frustrated with her life. God forbid you don't agree with her or try to blow sunshine and rainbows up her a&&. She doesn't sound like she gets out much (and therefor, is not very worldly), which is the worst kind of poster! I would bet her DH is bored of her and feels the very much the same
