OP, I've not done this exactly, but I understand and am sorry you are getting unkind responses. I think you're fine to clean it as others have suggested. In your shoes, the prospect of such a smelly, nasty task would probably lead me to toss the bowl. But then I'd feel guilty about the waste and landfill space taken up by a nice bowl.
I hope things get more manageable for you. |

Toss it! Ewwww

Op I have down gross shit too-here's my strategy when I seriously cannot deal with something like this-I stick it in the fridge or freezer to be dealt with at a better time.
Gross or not, if I have a bowl of something I just cover it and stick it in the fridge-then you don't have to deal with bugs or (gulp) maggots |
Yeah, if OP had said this was in the fridge nobody would be freaking out about it being there a month, everybody's done that. |
OP, I think you are my old roommate from college JK but she left worse messes than month old egg salad in our dorm room!
|
| Oh, OP, why oh why didn't you say you were in Europe for a month? Someone left the door open for you; you should have walked through it. It would have changed the whole tone of this thread, and, bottom-line, the helpful suggestions about the bowl's fate would have still been the same. |
| I'd scrape out the bowl, wash it by hand with hot water, then wash it in the dishwasher a few times on hot. It's glass, should not be a problem |
| Its ok OP, I do the same thing with my checkbook when I am stressed. I don't deal with it. It hasn't been balanced in a couple months. I have no idea how much money I have right now. |

OP here. Wow, I can't believe this thread got so many responses! Thanks for the kind comments and the er....interesting ones. Besides this egg salad bowl procrastination, I tend to let returns sit around way too long before getting around to doing something about them. I think lots of people procrastinate on things they don't want to deal with.
Basically, the egg salad bowl was something I did not want to deal with after it had been sitting out a few days. That turned into a month given a bunch of other stressors going on. I know I should have done something about it, but I procrastinated. I have a problem coping with stress, I am just not very good at good coping techniques, and when I'm stressed I let things some things slide, like this. I know a month is a long time and lately I've been feeling bad about the egg salad bowl. It did not smell until a few days ago, it was wrapped pretty well with saran wrap. The contents aren't attracting bugs or other nasties. I have a nook on my counter that is out of the way and I put it there to be dealt with later. I am not a hoarder. My home is extremely neat and tidy except for this month-old egg salad nastifying on my counter. Anyhow, I appreciate all the insight about the egg salad bowl and what to do with it. I have made my decision!

Another vote for just throwing out the whole thing.
And, OP, just ignore the nasty posters. Apparently they have NEVER done anything even remotely embarassing or unacceptable. Please. We've all done stupid stuff at one time or another. |
I could be cleaning my kitchen but I'm reading DCUM!! WHAT DID YOU DECIDE?!?!?!? |
OP here. Thank you for checking in! I decided to put it back in the fridge. No, just kidding, I decided to......toss! I don't want to be worrying about what nasties are getting all over my dishwasher. I'm just going to take the bowl with the saran wrap and toss it in the trash, to be immediately taken outside. Haven't done it yet but will do it tonight! |
|
Oh my, social services, lazy pig, ...really? And everyone of you has a perfectly sparkling home with not a scrap of dust or trash...puhleeeze.
OP, I would just toss it, becuase the smell might stay imo. |
Sigh. I too was hoping for a better story. Something along the lines of marital standoff. Ever see the Everybody Loves Raymond episode about the standoff over the suitcase on the stairs? Hilarious. We had that once about emptying the (clean) dishwasher. Now it is my hudband's job

I think we would be friends. |
