Left bowl with egg salad in it out on counter a month. Wash or toss?

Sounds like something on Hoarders.

It didn't smell until the last few days. The plastic wrap is on there pretty tightly.

I want to do something about it today. Do I wash it or toss the bowl? It's a nice bowl but I'm worried about unleashing salmonella or some horrible food poisoning bacteria if I wash it and put it in my dishwasher. This was very bad to procratinate on it so long. I won't do that again!

What would you do?

sorry

have to ask

WTF?

Right? I just can't begin to understand how this happens in the first place.

toss the egg salad, keep the bowl. Let it soak overnight with dishwashing liquid - don't forget it for another month and then either put in dishwasher or just wash it.

Not OP, but may be they traveled for a month?

I can't take it. I need to know how this happened? Argument with spouse over who will clean the kitchen? Sudden, unexpected travel? House so filthy you didn't notice that there was rotting food? Please tell so that I can feel better about myself. I'm not kidding.

I would wash it since its glass.

How messy is your house that it took a month to notice this?

OP, you are nasty.

OP here. I'll tell you what happened. Finished most of the egg salad and left the bowl on the counter. Had major stress at work that week so didn't get around to dealing with it. Then also that week the dishwasher leaked all over the floor and broke. Was dealing with that and just didn't get around to the bowl. Didn't get a repairperson out for another week, so I had to handwash all the other dishes and still didn't get around to the bowl. Then a few more weeks go by and dealing with various stresses. When I get stressed I put off things like that, it's a bad habit. There was saran on top so it didn't smell until the last few days and I have a nook in the counter where I put it so it's completely out of the way.

Anyhow, my house is extremely neat and tidy (people always remark how incredibly clean and neat it always is). The complete opposite of hoarder. It's just things like this I do tend to put off when I get stressed by other things that come up.

I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher, even after soaking. Why would you want pieces of that egg salad swilling with the other dishes, getting stuck in some crevace, ew! What PPs said: wash by hand, several times, don't let it touch anything else.

It didn't attract roaches or other bugs?

OP, your house is not neat or clen if you can leave egg salad out for a month. Never having done this, I don't know about the odor, except the HS chemistry experiment that smells like rotten eggs, thus rotten eggs smell and there would have been mold even it had been refriger. Having rotten, molded eggs on my kitchen counter would have .been hugely stressful for me.

OP, tidiness is not the same as clean. I'll have dust and some clutter that needs to be cleared, but I'll never have decomposing food on my counter. That's a FIRST priority. Neglecting stuff like that leads to vermin.

First, I have to agree with others who say really -- a month? How does this even happen unless you were out of town for a month and the house was empty or something?

Second, just clean the bowl well in the dishwasher. I can't believe this is a something you have to ask advice about. Just sanitize well and you're good to go.

Burn the whole thing outside!

PP again. Make sure to scrape the bowl well and remove all contents before dishwasher. If needed, I'd soak it with a little detergent for a day or so, to get off all the stuck on gunk.
