I asked and was told that it was bitten by flies, scratched itself, etc, and the cycle was hard to break but it was being treated. I was alarmed that it was being treated but still left open and uncovered (and being rebitten), but figured I am not a vet -- now even more concerned.

We saw the same thing back in May. This makes you wonder about the veracity of that situation.

I am ALWAYS noticing things like this at RZ, and I always hear from other people similar stories. Those animals are just NOT well-treated or cared for there.

They will run free in the streets, as it should be . . .

The first reports out said the illegal drug that they had was Ketamine. That is NOT a euthanasia drug but anesthetic drug. So what report is actually saying the drug charge is for the supposed euthansia drug...?

The laws are nuanced, but as a director she should have known the laws. Possession also does not mean she did it or was guilty of anything. Especially if the drugs were not stored in a secure way.

My understanding is that they did not even have the permission to have the drugs in their possession let alone use them.

Hmmm... The toxicology found xylazine in the wallaby, but no mention of ketamine.

Is vet-grade Xylazine a controlled substance?

Wash Post says the drug was a euthanasia drug.

From the Reston Patch

*Animal Control then met with Mogensen, who told them she humanely euthanied the wallaby (by IV injection into the jugular vein) with a drug called Beuthanasia. She told officers the wallaby was wet because they routinely wash the animal bodies."

Besides the drug issue. Can we really buy the story of washing the animal bodies before chucking them in the dumpster?

I cannot believe anyone is defending these people. This doesn't even pass the sniff test.

She SAID she used those drugs, but there is no toxicology report released yet. Time will tell though once everything is released

creepy - she was living in my old neighborhood!

Zoos are for losers. So are circuses.

Xylazine is another anesthetic, she told USDA she used that and told the police she used Beuthanisia. Wallaby was wet. Ketamine was the drug found. Wallaby was wet. What exactly is going on here? Would love to see all reports and the whole story!

First, I'm an animal lover. I make donations of goods, time and money to numerous non-profits. I dislike zoos, but go to them with my children to teach them many lessons about animals, and the world we live in.

Please take a moment to watch this video on YouTube. It will show you the zoo for humans (camp) in Haiti that was erected over two years ago when the earthquake hit.

If there is anything to reference when using the statement "how soon we forget," perhaps it could be Haiti, and perhaps we can express our outrage and motivation to induce change in Haiti, or any other place like it on earth - there are dozens (search Google Images "kibera Kenya" for a good wake-up call - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibera )
I do not mean to sell short the cruel and irresponsible actions that often occur at zoos small and large, but I do think that when human beings are living a quality of life below the animals in our zoos, we need to refocus our energy.
