It's all about your own ideas of beauty. For example, I tend to think that black men on the whole are more attractive than white men. So, for me a below-average looking black man looks about the same as an average looking white man (if you put everyone on a continuum of some sort). So my perspective might be different than someone who has the opposite preferences.

For example, I don't get how in white American culture, Blake Lively is held up as one of the most beautiful actresses. Jennifer Aniston is another one. It's not my culture, so I guess it's not for me to get.

There definitely is a difference on beauty standards among different international cultures, if not among different races within the US. Some East Asians consider more westernized is more beautiful - they would dye their hair yellow, lighten up their skin and do plastic surgery for bigger eyes and higher nose. If a white American saw a before and after picture, do you think you would necessarily pick the latter?

I said that I don't see the appeal of Blake and Aniston..meaning I don't find them beautiful. I don't know whether they are in fact, average or ugly.
