Can you tell if a woman from another race/ethnicity is ugly?

OP's question boils down to this:

Question; Do you think (person of other race) is ugly?
OP: I can't tell, he/she just looks (black/Asian) to me.

OP here.

You guys are taking offensive unnecessarily.

I'm a minority. When I'm hanging with friends of various races, we might see a girl/guy. I will think the person looks okay, the person that shares the race with the person being noticed will say that they are ugly.

That's my only point. I can obviously tell if a person is beautiful, no matter the race.

Not so when it comes to being average vs ugly. I can tell within my own race, but not others.

What's offensive about this question?

I don't think you are very articulate, OP.

Perhaps your comment or observation is this: I am not as picky about the looks of minority women as male minorities are. They have much higher standards than I do.

You seriously cannot tell if someone outside your race/ ethnicity is pretty or ugly? There is something wrong with you.

Is it because you don't see or know a lot of people of races outside of your own? But I don't get how you cannot instinctively tell if someone's physical appearance is symmetrical or the degree to which they are symmetrical--the measure of beauty.

you act like women of other races are not human and therefore you cannot compare them to the understood beauty of your own race.

this is the most disgusting thread in a while...

Hmmmm. I had a Chinese-American boyfriend who once said that he was extremely picky about the looks of Asian American women he would date. He said he thought that Caucasian men were willing to date just about any Asian woman and that they really had no standards for beauty with women outside their own race.

OP. If you worry about peoples' ugliness, you're not a very decent person. If you want to assess anyone's beauty, look at their smiles and their eyes. If those emit sincere, graceful expressions, you'll find beauty in all people. It is ugly for you to want to look for ugliness in others. Your type don't bring much joy to life - few men would ask a question like.

I think OP's question is an interesting one. Ultimately, it boils down to the eye of the beholder, as attractiveness always does. But, when you are talking about ethnic groups, the "beholder" is the culture you represent. Cultures tend to have relatively unified ideas of attractiveness that only sometimes, but not always, transfer to other cultures. For example, DH is taking Chinese lessons. His tutor, a Chinese lady, likes to discuss various cultural differences. Relative attractiveness is something she always comes back to in their talks. She says that our (American) concept of what's beautiful in a Chinese person is completely unattractive to Chinese. Our Chinese beauties would be considered average or ugly in China. She points to facial characteristics that we like versus what they like. A concrete example is Lucy Lu. I think she's beautiful and I am going out on a limb here to say that most Americans think she's beautiful. DH's tutor - no way. Ugly in China.

Also, Michelle Obama. I think she's an attractive woman. DH's tutor - no way. Ugly in China. She can't evaluate black women as attractive and she says it's a Chinese thing. Now, whether it really is a Chinese thing or not, who knows. But, I have heard elsewhere something similar.

I should have DH ask her about Halle Berry. If she thinks that Halle Berry is unattractive, I just don't know what to say.

My point is not to pick on Chinese ladies, Michelle Obama, or Lucy Lu. My point is that different cultures can have different views of beauty and it's hard to evaluate whether someone is attractive in the context of a different culture.

OMG...why don't you learn to read? I clearly said:

The irony of you trying to correct me, when you have poor grammar.

Are you for real right now? How the hell is it different when they are pretty vs. average vs. ugly? Its the same damn thing. So you can tell beatuty in another race but not someone being average or ugly? Grow up and get some help! Seriously.

OP here. This is my point. I'm not sure why so many folks are getting bent out of shape. I'm truly curious because when I go out in social settings with folks of other races, my idea of who is attractive is not the same as theirs. That's it...there's nothing sinister about my question.

But whatever. It's what I expected from this bunch of defensive women.

Are you for real? Do you honestly think that there's no difference between being pretty, average and ugly?

Please stop being so defensive. I'm convinced you're probably ugly. Only ugly people get offended when someone asks an innocent question about attractiveness.
