            Political Discussion

He just released a statement...I don't even know what to make of this:
 http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/08/edwards.statement/index.html Ugh. |

Hey Mr. Edwards, this is the way it works:
Political life without side squeeze OR side squeeze with no political life. CAN NOT DO BOTH. |

In America. Works fine in France. |

I feel like it only works if the spouse doesn't care and there aren't a lot of public statements like "I've only loved one woman for the last thirty years." Oh, and if the wife isn't acting as his mouthpiece in a presidential election. And isn't dying of cancer. It just seems like he recklessly broke the heart of his faithful wife (and children). Maybe I'm naive and wrong, but I doubt it. If they didn't seem to promote having that sort of storytale marriage, it just wouldn't bother me so much. |
| I agree. The edition of Saving Graces I read came out in late 2006 and pays tribute over and over to their wonderful marriage and how lucky she is to have him. It's a little hard to swallow. |

As for the point about cheating on a dying wife, I believe Newt Gingrich cheated on his first wife while she was being treated for cancer and actually delivered the divorce papers to her while she was in the hospital. McCain's first wife, while not dying, was permanently disfigured when he cheated on her. So, apparently this behavior is not abhorrent enough to get you to the upper tiers of the Republican party. If the Enquirer story turns out to be accurate, Edwards may have to change parties to further his ambitions. This is a silly statement. Edwards should be judged as an individual and not compared to anyone else, Democrat or Republican. |

You may not have noticed that my remark that you quoted was made in response to this question, "Is it because cheating on your dying wife is so abhorent?" As I pointed out, it was not abhorrent enough to prevent two Republicans from reaching the upper tiers of their party. It is not a matter of judging Edwards, but an evaluation of the relative abhorrence of his conduct. That said, the American justice system is based on the principle of equal justice. While this is not a matter for a court of law, I still think its a good idea to hold individuals to the same standards. If there is something disqualifying about cheating on your ailing wife, then the Republicans need to find a new nominee. |

Ahem, Jay. "Works" for whom? Ahhhh! Ask the wives where ever they are how they feel about it. Any family discord is dangerous in politics. Just wait until we see the first European politician dethroned by a scorned woman (mistress or wife). It will happen. |

I said "France", not "Europe". British politicians seem to be constantly caught sleeping with Russian spies, members of the same sex, or something else that gets them in trouble. But, France is a different story. There is the famous story of how Mitterand's wife, mistress, and daughter with mistress all attended his funeral. Of course, Sarkozy got elected, divorced his wife, and married a model without anyone blinking an eye. Having a mistress is apparently a long tradition for French Prime Ministers. |

OK, I normally agree with you but this time, no way. Here is what I heard: Mitterand's wife was always annoyed and embarrassed by that other woman. She never felt empowered to do anything about it. The funeral thing was a horrible event for her. This is from her daughter. The press can spin it the way they want. Heck every man would love to believe that his wife is OK with "it". The sexist French media will present it that way, but take a closer look at the hearts of the wives. They are wounded, and whatever system they have in France that makes women submit will probably not continue. In one respect, all wives of politicians are special. They tolerate so much crap. I would not make a good political wife. My pride would get in the way. Sarkozy is a jerk. |
| For some reason, I don't believe her told his wife about his affair eons ago. I believe he only told her when things got too "hot" for him. And is only trying to make it seem like his family was already at peace with his indiscretions. So, we as members of the public shouldn't judge him. |

I believe he's also the father. Why else would they be paying off Andrew Young and Rielle Hunter? And why is he spending late-nights with the woman and the kid. This is only the beginning of the story. That kid's first words will probably be "I'm the granddaughter of a mill worker..." Then we'll know for sure.
 |

LOL! I watched the Nightline interview and Edwards came very close to using that line as part of explanation for how he got involved with Hunter. |

You could be right. We'll need someone from France to settle it.
On this much we agree. |

Are you kidding? This could qualify Edwards to be President, if we look to Bill Clinton as an example. |
