I strongly supported Edwards in the primary, but, affair or no, I don't think he should be the pick for VP. Don't need a second Democratic candidate who hasn't had a lot of time in office. Plus Obama needs someone who is willing to play a background role. I wonder if Edwards would do that now. Also I admire him a lot for his work against poverty. If he were VP, he wouldn't be able to take controversial positions and continue on with the work. |
As for the point about cheating on a dying wife, I believe Newt Gingrich cheated on his first wife while she was being treated for cancer and actually delivered the divorce papers to her while she was in the hospital. McCain's first wife, while not dying, was permanently disfigured when he cheated on her. So, apparently this behavior is not abhorrent enough to get you to the upper tiers of the Republican party. If the Enquirer story turns out to be accurate, Edwards may have to change parties to further his ambitions. Why is it when a Republican does it then it is a big deal and makes the news, but when a Dem. does something it is considered a private matter? |
Edwards is a public figure since he publicly stated that he would like to be considered as a VP candidate. Fair game. |
This is a faulty assumption. First, its not clear that the story concerning Edwards is even true. He has denied it. If the Enquirer had any kind of proof -- especially photos -- he would be busy admitting to a sin and begging forgiveness rather than denying the whole thing. As for it being a big deal when Republicans do it, I'm not sure what to say to that. It certainly was not a big enough deal to prevent Gingrich and McCain from becoming Speaker of the House and Republican presidential nominee respectively. There hasn't been big enough deals made of Larry Craig and David Vetter to cause them to leave the Senate. Certainly a big deal was made of Democrat Eliot Spitzer. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but when the Republicans impeached Clinton, I don't believe they were claiming his behavior was a private matter. |
As Jeff noted, it's not totally clear that your assumption is true -- it appears to be a natural human tendency to see the press as biased against our own views. But if there is truth to it, it might be because of the hypocrisy involved when the "family values" bunch devalue their own families. That might also explain why super-prosecutor Spitzer was hit so hard. |
As someone who has supported conservative economic policies I find myself in distress, beacuse both bad economic policies and foreign policies were not what it promised. I am particularly stunned how people who support Republicans no matter what..As you know thanks to the 'surge" another 70 or so people including some children were killed yesterday in Iraq..as long as it is someone elses kids it doesn't matter to them. What matters going forward is if MaCain has sound judgment on the events and reality. he's yet to demonstrate that. Besides, his rethoric suggest things can get worse. |
As I've told my dh-I'm hoping this is what most Americans have come to realize on election day. My mom is a republican and voting for Obama! |
Obamicans really DO exist! (Sorry for OT response...) |
Noone in their right minds would pick a guy cheating on his dying wife as their running mate. It might take months to get this cleared up and Obama doesn't have the time for this side-show. |
Yes, they do. |
Totally agree with you. While I do not think that allegation of cheating will impact one's ability to be an effective Vice President (see Clinton), picking Edwards would be seen as a lack of judgment on Obama's part. |
If it is true, I can't believe that a snakey character would take peoples money fro his campaign, with the chance that it could come out before elections and DESTROY any chance of the dems taking the WH. He is NUTS if it is true. |
We've got an Obamican at my house. |
It is not that they are alleging that he is just having an affair (which Clinton made ok)...they are alleging that he has two families and a dying wife! Hello...that is bad stuff. Gets Republicans kicked out of office in New York even when the wife is healthy. |
If you you are referring to Vito Fosella, he is still in office. I'm not sure which office you Edwards should be kicked out of. |
