I still believe and I still pray.

That is completely ignorant and very misleading. There are plenty of atheists in foxholes (literal or otherwise). Why would you feel that in order for others to cope with difficult situations they have to agree with you first? Doesn't that seem a bit egocentric to you?

Do you even know who Ernie Pyle was? You sound very angry and bitter. You also have a problem with comprehension.

I'm not angry or bitter. I'm stating that the claim that there are no atheists in foxholes is ignorant and false, as is the claim that when faced with adversity all atheists will pray and believe in god.

You are welcome to believe that all atheists pray when things get tough, but that would be inaccurate and ridiculous.

Meanwhile, the athiest dies with a lifetime of good works has no chance. That is why I would not be surprised at the outcome of trusting a rapist over an athiest.

I often thought about this too. It makes no sense.

The study makes me sad, but does not surprise me. Atheists are oppressed in our country of religious freedom.

Atheist and cancer survivor here. In my dark hours, I sure hoped that I would live to bring up my children, but no, I didn't pray.

Sounds like you think this atheist's own hatred and vitriol is funny. But her hatred and vitriol aren't exactly consistent with a strong moral code, are they?

^^^^ are funny, not is funny. Got distracted.

I take it the people in that study would choose to leave their children any day in the hands of a rapist rather than in those of an atheist.

Well, the Darwin Awards weren't created for nothing.

Honestly, I don't care what some (or most if you will) think of me as an atheist. I don't think kindly of them either, however, I would rather leave my child with a fundamentalist Christian rather than a rapist... the lesser of two evils.

I wrote the original quote. I'm not an athiest. Agnostic perhaps. Distancing myself from the fundamentalist Christians in my family. Who are indeed very hypocritical. (And freaks.) One of my closest friends is an atheist; she truly loves and respects others. Quite the opposite of that religious part of my family.

As someone who grew up in a fundamentalist evangelical family and now works in a very atheistic academic environment I have seen the best and worst of both.

I know some fantastic people who are Christian and who are atheist and I know some people who aren't that nice who are Christians and who are atheists. Do I trust Christians more - yeah probably because of a familiarity or a blind trust that they will be more trustworthy because we share something in common. In the same way I trust mountain bikers and backpackers because again we have a shared connection and connections build trust.

Both I would say are about equal in terms of having similar numbers of people being convinced they are right, being unaccepting of the others' beliefs, being narrow-minded in their own viewpoints and being intolerant of others who think differently. I've sat through pretty much identical discussions / debates at church and at the school - just about different topics and from opposing viewpoints.

I bet that there were many people who were praying for your recovery, however. Why didn't you tell everyone you knew NOT to pray for you. That is what true atheist would do.

I'm a Christian but I don't get why you think a 'true' atheist would tell people not to pray for them. they may think it is a pointless exercise but usually out of appreciation for people being caring and out of being polite I would expect an atheist to just say Thank you. I don't believe in 'vibes' but if someone says I am sending good vibes your way, I just say Thank you - not please don't.
