1) You were assaulted by a mentor and coach
2) It was covered up by many white, educated men who were supposed to be your mentors
3) Now they have been arrested and fired, but the students at Penn State riot to show support for the men that hurt you

In a small college town - I can imagine that feels like the whole town hates you and could be out to get you if they find out your identity. Seriously. You'd have to walk by these people on a daily basis.

wtf with the "white men" stuff???? now this is a racial issue????

Heeelllooo...these were boys in a at-risk youth group. Read: black boys.

Not the pp you are responding to, but since when does "at risk youth" = black boys? You sound really prejudiced and just as stupid as the Penn State idiots. At least they have lack of age as an excuse.

What in the world? This is not about race. Really.

13:10, you sound completely ignorant and racist yourself.

Of course, by that point they'll have pretty much established Penn State as the "child rape university" for the next 4-5 decades.

I was thinking along similar lines, having read this

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/11/sports/ncaafootball/penn-state-students-in-clashes-after-joe-paterno-is-ousted.html?hpw

One day Mike Clark, 18, and Jeff Heim, 19, might SERIOUSLY regret being quoted in this article. At least, I hope they will.

I read this quote from the article:
“We got rowdy, and we got maced,” Jeff Heim, 19, said rubbing his red, teary eyes. “But make no mistake, the board started this riot by firing our coach. They tarnished a legend.”

No, I'm sorry. The legend 'tarnished' himself.

I root for Ohio State, but have a ton of friends who went to PSU and bleed blue-and-white. 99% have come out supporting the actions of the trustees in all of this, and questioning why McQueary is still in his position. I have nothing but respect for them.

I would imagine that the majority of people in a hiring position would not hold something like this against the 99.9% of Penn State students and alumni who have nothing to do with this. Nobody with sense would. (though i wouldn't knowingly hire someone who protested the firing.)

sorry I am posting this in a few places

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/10/penn-state-scandal-rumors-sandusky-pimping_n_1086099.html

"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden said on the radio. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak."

Ugh. Please let that not be true. This story has been horrible enough as it is.

Agree completely.

I think '98 is key. If Joe knew about the '98 incident (likely?), then I give him much less rope in '02. But if he didn't know about '98, and didnt hear the details on '02, then I think he has more wiggle room. Sandusky wasnt a coach, Paterno wasnt his boss - so he told the guys in charge and let them handle it. I think that is kind of reasonable actually. He wasn't in position to judge someone objectively who he had known and trusted for 30 years. That is why these scandals always take place - you don't believe it when it is someone so close to you. So you need third party authorities (police, etc.) to take action.

But, I'm guessing he knew more than just '02, so that is why I am waiting to hear more before I vilify him.

I also went to PSU for grad school. I'm horrified by the events relating to the football program and its staff. I'm absolutely NOT embarrassed to be affiliated with PSU. Sorry, I think that's not a reasonable reaction.

The English Department at Penn State would have taken these allegations seriously. They are a wonderful group of people.

Absolutely 100% agree.

I said a prayer of thanks when DS chose Pitt over Penn State. Now I am practically embarrassed at how blessed I feel. I grew up in PA and can't imagine PSU ever ever being the same. Just won't and can't happen.

And because most of them don't have children.

Once you become a parent, you really start putting things into perspective. Just imagining something like this happening to YOUR child makes you want to strange everyone involved in this tragedy with your bare hands.

PP, I can't imagine a mother of a 4-year-old boy being 'proud' of PSU in the light of what had happened.

Oh for sweet fucks sake! You most certainly DO NOT have to be a parent to see how vile this whole situation is. Get over yourself.

Nine days wonder. Seriously.

It won't matter in two years. It won't matter much next year.

And the chain of command failed, but more the person who witnessed the actual act and turned and ran away. Seriously.

My sisters were abused by my grandfather. They managed to protect me. If this cowardly fuck was abused by Sandusky, all the more reason for him to step up and protect someone else. We are vilifying the wrong person.

I disagree that this will go away. All of us today for all of our lives will remember and history will forever record that the "winningest coach in Div 1 football history" was fired for his moral failures. I'm not saying the university will collapse but Paterno will never receive a hero's welcome and the football program will be tarnished for 50 years.
