Really? You want to compare the two? Really? Not even in a million years do the two events come close to being comparable. Showing support for Tech is nothing like showing support for Paterno. And that is what those students are doing. They are showing support for Paterno, not for Penn State and not for the victims. |
You are completely right to be concerned and ashamed. You are right that the actions of those few do not reflect the majority, but it is the few we are all going to remember. |
How is Paterno getting railroaded? This is a team sport, and he achieved his successes on the shoulders of everyone on the team. He and others had moral obligation to report him to the police and stop him from doing this to others. |
I have a friend who showed her support of Paterno today on FB too and she is the mom to 2 young boys. She didn't even go there and not sure why she has such a strong feeling Paterno (she didn't grow up in the State College area). Maybe her husband or parents went there, I don't know. And she posted something on Paterno's wall! I give you credit for standing up to your friend--I'm way too chickenshit to say anything to mine. I mean, believe what you want but to put something positive about Paterno on your FB page when you have two young boys just seems a little stupid to me knowing how politically charged this situation is. But some people are REALLY stupid when it comes to FB so I'm not surprised. |
Not the pp you are responding to, but since when does "at risk youth" = black boys? You sound really prejudiced and just as stupid as the Penn State idiots. At least they have lack of age as an excuse. |
i kind of thought of the same thing. As a foster mom, people are a bit suprised that the maority of the children in our system in my county (VA suburb) are white. I guess they only assume black people end up in the system. |

they think he is getting railroaded. Maybe he did nothing wrong? we really don't know all the facts. that is their issue. If he didn't know about the 98 incident and didnt fully hear or understand that 02 incident, then perhaps they are right. Those are big assumptions though. Sandusky was not working for Paterno in 09, and the grand jury found his testimony to be completely credible (but not so for the other two). |
Poor analogy. PSU administration is guilty for protecting a criminal in its ranks, for not protecting a child when confronted with eyewitness accounts of a heinous crime. The VT community was the victim of a psychologically sick student. |
both tragedies nonetheless. |
Just separated by 180 degrees. |

Hey kids, let's put this in football terms so you can understand:
You're rooting for the WRONG DAMN TEAM, y'all. I want to give these students a pass because they are young and immature... but I'm really, really having a hard time doing so. |
| They're 18-20 years old and just still in the first stage: denial. They'll come around. |
| Went to PSU for graduate school. Graduated a few years ago. I never bled blue and white, but I'm shocked and sickened by the rioting. Embarrassed to be affiliated. |
| I wanted my daughter (who's a senior next year) to get into Penn State. Now, I'm not so sure at all. Not because I don't think it's still a good school, but because I know folks will think of this when they see the school line on her resume. |
